    Special Instructions to Applicants:

    This is an entry level position located at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Hydrographic Science Research Center. The Hydrographic Science Research Center is located at the NASA John C. Stennis Space Center, which is a “federal city” that boasts the world’s largest concentration of marine scientists. The successful candidate will be required to pass a NASA background security check as well as a USM employment background check.

    Job Summary:

    The research engineer will participate in directed research activities involving engineering tasks, including at sea operations. The position is based at the USM facilities at the Stennis Space Center, but activities can occur at other USM facilities and facilities of other organizations. This position requires to travel and spend time onboard research vessels.

     

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Use engineering manuals, standard publications, and technical material to obtain information and pertinent data for use by higher level engineers, contractors and/or customers.

    + Keep abreast of emerging technologies and professional developments to maintain currency in the field and for application to work assignments.

    + Perform engineering duties in support of ocean mapping and related activities. These duties involve hardware, software, integration of both, and utilizing mapping and related systems in the marine environment.

    + Perform developmental assignments in the application of established principles, techniques, methods, and procedures of professional engineering in the area of ocean mapping.

    + Provides programmatic and technical support to project directors or principal investigators and external researchers as appropriate and performs other duties as assigned.

    + Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    A Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

     

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

     

    + Ability to travel and work from large and small vessels.

    + AutoCAD experience

    + Matlab experience

    + Teamwork and interpersonal skills

    + Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to communicate with a diverse group of individuals

    Preferred Qualifications

    A Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program. Because the position require to work with export controlled equipment and to obtain clearance to work within a Federal Facility, priority will be given to US citizens or green card holder applicants.
