Within the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity (OMA&D), welebalt—Intellectual House is dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment for American Indian, Alaska Native, and Indigenous (AI/AN) students, staff, and faculty at the University of Washington, Seattle. Our mission is to connect students to cultural resources that support their holistic well-being (cultural, emotional, mental, and spiritual) while promoting academic success and professional development.
As the primary hub for AI/AN student success, welebalt—Intellectual House serves as a crucial resource for academic support and community connection. Our staff actively engages with the AI/AN student population and Registered Student Organizations to identify successes, challenges, and gaps in campus services. In collaboration with other units within the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMA&D), we develop short- and long-term strategies to enhance recruitment, outreach, and retention efforts for AI/AN students. welebalt—Intellectual House is committed to increasing the success of AI/AN students at UW and preparing them for leadership roles within their tribal communities and the broader region. We support students’ ongoing involvement with their home tribes through various cultural and academic programs.
Serving as the first point of contact for inquiries related to resources available for AI/AN students, welebalt—Intellectual House regularly collaborates with Tribal Nations, American Indian and Alaska Native-focused organizations, and tribal educational departments to ensure student safety, well-being, and overall success. Our visible presence as a Coast Salish longhouse-style facility on campus symbolizes respect for Washington’s first people and promotes Indigenous traditions into the university experience.
Position Purpose
The Assistant Director of welebalt—Intellectual House plays a crucial leadership role in overseeing the day-to-day operations, financial management, and strategic program development aimed at supporting American Indian, Alaska Native, and Indigenous students at the University of Washington. Reporting directly to the welebalt—Intellectual House Director under the umbrella of Student Success within the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity, the Assistant Director ensures that cultural, academic, and community support systems are in place for these student groups.
In this position, the Assistant Director supervises and provides professional development opportunities for student staff, helping them enhance their leadership, communication, and event planning skills. They manage the budget, develop and coordinate culturally relevant student programming, and provide policy guidance to improve the campus climate. The role also involves collaborating with tribal governments, university departments, and student organizations to foster community engagement, equity, and student success.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Administrative and Financial Management 40%
+ Manage and coordinate daily operations and administrative functions for welebalt—Intellectual House.
+ Supervise and coach student staff, ensuring effective performance and professional development in alignment with operational goals.
+ Manages, monitors, prepares, presents, and implements budget.
+ Oversee and manage the bi-annual budget, including periodic assessments, adjustments, and recommendations.
+ Prepare financial proposals and collaborate with the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity on budget strategies and long-term planning.Program Development and Coordination 30%
+ Lead signature programming and supervise the implementation of student programming, including publicity, marketing, and increasing student participation.
+ Coordinate programming based on best practices and professional development, ensuring effective use of resources and alignment with leadership goals.
+ Develop, plan, and coordinate student leadership development programs, conferences, workshops, and courses that emphasize multiculturalism and diversity.Policy Advisory and Community Engagement 20%
+ Provide policy development, coordination, and advice related to American Indian and Alaska Native student programming and the overall campus climate.
+ Interface with campus groups, including university departments and student organizations, to enhance community collaboration and support.
+ Evaluate programmatic impact through student satisfaction surveys, resource tracking, and conference attendance to incorporate best practices into reports and strategic planning.Other Related Duties 10%
+ Participate in training courses and relevant professional development activities to support individual and departmental growth.
+ Work to operationalize and integrate learning from these trainings into the work unit and processes.
+ Embrace innovation and act as a catalyst for positive change in equity and student engagement.
+ Continuously work to identify and address inequities within the work and oneself, with a commitment to improvement. Take thoughtful, strategic risks to foster a more engaged and inclusive student community at welebalt—Intellectual House.
+ Lead and/or contribute to special projects and/or initiatives, as requested, that relate to advancing the mission, vision, values, and goals of the IH.
+ Serve, collaborate, and actively participate on university-wide committees or projects as needed. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
+ Bachelor's degree in higher education, tribal government, or related field
+ At least 5 years of experience in higher education or tribal government, with a focus on program development, student success, or community engagement. _Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration._ **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
+ Strong understanding of the mission, vision, and goals of welebalt—Intellectual House, OMA&D, and the university, and how this role contributes to achieving them.
+ In-depth knowledge of the Indigenous practices and customs of the Coast Salish region and Washington State, along with an understanding of the historical context, cultural uniqueness, and sovereignty of Tribal Nations.
+ Skilled in organizing and executing tasks, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while taking initiative and offering support to colleagues as needed.
+ Strong emotional intelligence and conflict resolution skills, enabling effective navigation of challenges and fostering a supportive, collaborative environment.
+ Capable of addressing culturally sensitive issues with care and advocating for the needs of Indigenous students.
+ Expertise in planning and coordinating events and meetings, ensuring successful execution while enhancing participation and engagement. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ In-depth knowledge of Indigenous cultures and federal policies related to higher education, with an ability to navigate and advocate within these frameworks.
+ Experience collaborating with tribal governments and community leaders, effectively engaging with key stakeholders such as university administrators, faculty, and students to foster partnerships that support Indigenous student success.
+ Well-informed on current events and key issues impacting the University of Washington and tribal and Native communities.
+ Knowledge of American Indian and Alaska Native education policies and practices. **CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT**
+ Due to the welebalt—Intellectual House hours of operations, the work schedule for this position is variable.
