NORWALK COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICTJob Title Piano Accompanist Reports to Building Principal or designee Position Purpose Under the direction of the vocal music teachers, accompany school choirs during rehearsals and concerts, assist the directors in the leading of section rehearsals and concerts, and the coaching of individuals and small ensembles, and to do other related work as required. Essential Performance ResponsibilitiesAccompany Middle School and High school choirs, soloists and small ensembles during school dayAccompany choir concerts and State Large GroupAccompany for All-State sectionalsPlay piano at an advanced level (up to 8 parts in open score music) Sight read complex musical scoresRecord accompaniments as needed for rehearsals using software applicationsPromote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.Lead small group sectionals as directedContinue to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.Assist with organizing and maintaining a system for accurate and complete record-keeping of the music literatureSupervise students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation.Show Choir accompanist - schedules determined annuallyMS Show Choir - Tuesday / Thursday morning rehearsals; Friday eventsHS Show Choir - Tuesday evening rehearsals; Saturday events; camps in summer and winterLead / play combo bandSenior solo accompanistMusical accompanistHS - April (approximately 2 weeks)MS - May (approximately 2 weeks)Perform other related tasks as assigned by the vocal music teachers, principal and other administratorsNote: The above description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesPlay piano at an advanced level and sight read complex musical scoresAccompany choirs, soloists and small ensemblesAdvanced music theoryTechnical aspects of field of specialtyAbility to use computer network system and software applications as neededAbility to organize and coordinate workAbility to communicate effectively with directors, staff, and studentsAbility to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of workUnderstand and follow oral and written directionsAssist students in learning vocal music interpretationQualifications ProfileAny combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by private or college-level training in piano and music theoryTwo years of experience as an accompanist in a school setting preferredPhysical RequirementsPhysical requirements vary by individual job assignment but requires a minimum of the following physical requirements: Manual dexterity, walking, standing, bending, carrying, climbing, lifting minimum of 20 pounds, driving, pushing, pulling, reaching, sitting, and stooping.Working ConditionsVaried.Terms of EmploymentStudent school calendar--approximatly 180 days. Wage and work year to be established by the Board. Employment subject to provisions of board policy, state and federal law. EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated annually by the building administration, or in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of staff. FLSA StatusNon-Exempt.
