    The Position

    DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS).

     

    This recruitment will fill positions in: Alamo, Austin, Battle Mountain, Beatty, Eureka, Fallon, Fernley, Lovelock, Hawthorne, Orovada, Pioche, Wells, Winnemucca, Yerington, Reno, Ely. Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. OR Incumbents perform basic tasks or elements of the job not requiring the additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at the next level in the series.

     

    DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS). Assignments vary widely and incumbents are assigned to various divisions within the department including the Nevada Highway Patrol, State Fire Marshal's Office, Investigations, Parole & Probation, and Capitol Police. DPS Officer I: Upon successful graduation from a Nevada P.O.S.T approved law enforcement academy incumbents work under close supervision as a trainee within the division to which assigned. Incumbents receive training in the duties described in the series concept and will progress to the next level in the series upon meeting the minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance, and with the recommendation of the appointing authority. This is the continuing trainee level in the series and upon successful completion the incumbent will progress from a probationary employee to a full-time permanent employee. The DPS is a very diverse agency that performs many different duties ranging from patrolling the streets to protecting the Governor. Some special DPS assignments include, but are not limited to, function as Reserve Officer for the Capitol Police Division operating on a part time basis covering fixed post operations. Must have current Category 1 P.O.S.T. certificate and be willing to work varied shifts to include holidays, swing, and graveyard shifts; accident investigation; DUI enforcement; K-9 units; and motorcycle patrol, to mention a few. You are trained to work anywhere in the state. As personal or family needs change, officers can transfer to any area offices, in other words, you won't have to spend your whole career working in the same location unless you want to.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)

     

    Certification as a Category I Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T approved law enforcement academy.

     

    Special Notes

     

    Applicants must meet minimum standards for appointment as a peace officer as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.

     

    Incumbents must pass the Peace Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment.

     

    Incumbents must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy.

    Special Requirements

    This position is subject to call-out or call-back.

     

    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.

     

    Statewide travel is required.

     

    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.

     

    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a felony in this State or of any offense, which would be a felony if committed in this state.

     

    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of any offense involving the illegal sale or manufacture of controlled substances.

     

    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime.

     

    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of domestic violence.

     

    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have used any illegal controlled substance within one year of the date of application including prescription drugs not prescribed to them.

     

    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.

     

    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.

    The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience.     1) The salary range indicated in this announcement is based on the Employee/Employer post-tax retirement compensation schedule. An employer-only option is available at a reduced salary range. ($64,289.52- $96,486.48). Under this pre-tax plan your take home pay is higher. The employer pays the total PERS contribution on your behalf. You pay for your half of the PERS contribution through a salary reduction or in lieu of a pay raise. Employer paid contributions are not deposited into your member account and are not refundable if you terminate from your employment. Generally, salaries start at the lowest level of a step 1 and increase with each year of service to the highest level of a step 10. Do you understand these options.
