Nestled in between New York's famous Catskill Mountains and the Adirondack Park, SUNY Oneonta is a vibrant mid-sized campus community seeking a skilled Outdoor Education & Recreation Coordinator with a passion for engaging college students with the natural world. This position falls within the Department of Campus Recreation within the Student Affairs Division. Reporting to the Director of Campus Recreation, this role has a 10-month obligation period.
The Campus Recreation team offers diverse recreational experiences including intramural sports, 15+ club sports, 2 fitness centers, group fitness classes, 3 outdoor clubs, regular guided outdoor trips, an Outdoor Leadership program, and equipment loans & rentals for the campus community. Our goal through these opportunities is to empower participants to become leaders, discover community, create healthy social, emotional, and physical behaviors, and become increasingly self-aware and embracing of others.
This position is responsible for overseeing the various programs within our Outdoor Office, including regular guided trips, 3 outdoor clubs, equipment rentals, our Outdoor Leadership training program (OSOL), and also serves as the Program Director for College Camp, which is a 276 acre property adjoined to the North end of campus with miles of hiking trails, a lodge, a pond, 3 lean-tos, and more. This position is student facing and has plenty of opportunity to collaborate with other areas and offices.

Duties include but are not limited to:
Outdoor Program Management (40%):
+ Assist in the implementation and execution of all Outdoor programs including, trips, special events, workshops and certification courses.
+ Oversee and advise 3 Outdoor Clubs (Outdoor Adventure Club, Ski & Snowboard Club, Mountain Bike Club), including programs, events, services, functions and equipment
+ Market and post all events on Campus connections, social media, and other campus communications.
+ Ensure all trip logistics for our trip program and club functions are prepared including vehicle reservations & schedules, equipment, food, permits and campsites, budget, communication plans & devices, etc.
Equipment Management (25%):
+ Maintain a comprehensive Outdoor Programs Equipment Room, which includes over a thousand pieces of outdoor rental equipment and 30+ bicycles, a bicycle repair shop, ski (downhill & cross country), a ski and snowboard waxing service, and much more. Our Gear Shop tagline is "If you have the socks & underwear, we've got the rest!"
+ Manage the equipment rental program & program staff, ensuring regular open rental hours and following program procedures.
+ Ensure that all trips have the proper equipment available and that participant gear issuing/return procedures are established and followed.
College Camp Program Director (10%) :
+ Serve as the College Camp Program director and the Co-chair of the College Camp Advisor Board.
+ Plan and promote events and programs at College Camp
+ Manage the low ropes challenge course elements
+ Oversee the Lean-to Reservations program
+ Work closely with OAS staff and College Camp Caretaker to promote and develop College Camp to increase student, campus, and community use.
Outdoor Education & Leadership development (10%):
+ Collaborate with Residential Life to host an Outdoor Wilderness Living Section (OWLS).
+ Plan and prepare Guide Trainings alongside the director of campus recreation.
+ Assist the Director with executing lessons and trips for the Oneonta School of Outdoor Leadership program (OSOL) as needed.
+ Collaborate with SPES in coordinating logistics and reviewing risk management procedures for academic outdoor classes.
Administration (15%):
+ Assist with the development and implementation of a risk management plan for Outdoor Programs in conjunction with the department's plan emphasizing emergency response, wilderness first aid, severe weather protocols, and incident documentation. Evaluate trip plans to ensure they are appropriate (group size, activity, skill levels, time of year, etc.)
+ Manage the budget process by planning, developing and overseeing the expenditure and revenue accounts for the Outdoor Pursuits program and making purchases and recommendations related to the Outdoor Pursuits program budget.
+ Recruit, hire, train, develop, and supervise a student guide and equipment staff of about 10-15 employees, and facilitate regular team meetings to keep everyone on the same page.
+ Collect Evaluations and other relevant assessment data to support departmental and institutional assessment work.
The position is required to work a varied schedule, including early mornings, late nights and weekends. The Coordinator must be self-directed and self-motivated, have the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and must be willing to serve as a representative on campus-wide and departmental committees

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's degree
+ Certified at minimum of Wilderness First Aid & CPR/AED (Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification required within first 6 months of employment)
+ Professional experience coordinating outdoor education/recreation experiences
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
+ Experience leading backcountry trips
Preferred:
+ Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Outdoor leadership, or a related field
+ Certification in one or more outdoor activity disciplines from ACA, ACCT, AMGA, PCIA, AAIRE, PSIA, USA Cycling, PMBIA, etc.
+ Higher Education Experience in Outdoor Education/Recreation
+ Experience supervising a team
+ Experience working with diverse populations
