    The Emory National Primate Research Center (EPC) of Emory University Field Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia, has an immediate opening for a Senior Research Specialist with a background and interest in nonhuman primate social behavioral management and biomedical research. The main focus, and general in-house title, will beBreeding Colony Specialist.

     

    The EPC is a major biomedical research institution that is rapidly expanding with its main facilities at Emory University’s Atlanta campus and 117-acre Field Station in Lawrenceville.     Working within the EPC Division of Animal Resources, the Senior Research Specialist/Breeding Colony Specialist you will report to the Colony Director and work closely with the Assistant Director of Animal Resources, Field Station and the Associate Director of Animal Resources to coordinate breeding and research needs of animals for both the Field Station and Main Station campuses. A major focus of the position includes curation of colony data to aid in management of the animal colony and tracking data for reporting purposes including stewardship of animal assignment data and generating regulatory required reports.

     

    The successful candidate should be professional, personable, motivated, dependable, detail-oriented, have a positive attitude and passion for research.

    EMORY UNIVERSITY KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Major focus of the position includes the curation of colony data to aid in management of the animal colony and tracking data for reporting purposes including stewardship of animal assignment data and generating regulatory required reports.

    + Serves as a technical resource for other research personnel.

    + Analyzes and interprets the results of studies.

    + Investigates and recommends alternative approaches to improve the quality of results.

    + Trains research staff in specialized procedures and theoretical concepts for unique tests.

    + Recommends new equipment and supplies needed for specialized procedures.

    + Provides input into the development of departmental goals and objectives.

    + May assist in grant and other funding application preparation.

    + Review literature for related research developments and techniques.

    + Prepares written materials, charts and graphs on specialized techniques and research results for publication or presentation.

    + Oversees quality assurance of research performed by others.

    + Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.

    + Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

    EMORY PRIMATE CENTER KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Major focus of the position includes the curation of colony data to aid in management of the animal colony and tracking data for reporting purposes including stewardship of animal assignment data and generating regulatory required reports.

    + Assist with the identification and coordination of animals for research assignments, transport or sales working with the Monkey Allocation Committee (MAC).

    + Assist with the facilitation of animal assignments using ARMS and the MAC database as an appointed member of the MAC Committee.

    + Assist with colony modeling and projecting future population growth.

    + Responsibilities will include colony management data collection, data entry and data analysis in collaboration with other animal resources and other EPC units for colony breeding management and data preparation for reporting and management purposes.

    + Position may include limited hands-on animal work, behavioral observations of animal groups and specimen collections.

    + Support the Colony Manager with organizing animal colony data collection and analysis to guide administrative decisions.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    + Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and four years of research experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
