NYU Los Angeles is seeking a local, part-time lecturer to teach an undergraduate course, Copyright, Commerce, and Culture, under the sponsorship of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, Department of Media, Culture, and Communication. The course will take place in the academic center in the Fairfax/La Brea area of Los Angeles. Teaching commences, in person, in Spring 2025 (January - May).

The instructor role includes all preparation, instruction delivery, and grading. Some administrative assistance is available to support the preparation of course materials. Courses are to be intellectually challenging in content and rigorous student assessment is required.

Course Description

This course examines the basic tenets and operative principles of the global copyright system. Considers the ways in which media industries, artists, and consumers interact with the copyright system and assesses how well it serves its stated purposes: to encourage art and creativity. Special emphasis on the social, cultural, legal, and political issues that have arisen in recent years as a result of new communicative technologies. Assignments will include active participation on the course blog, several short exams, and a final research paper.

Expectation of Hours:

The class meeting pattern will be discussed with qualified applicants during the interview process. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and marking, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute “office hour” on location, during which time she or he will be available to meet with students.
