    Position Summary

    The Assistant Medical Director of the University of Utah Hospital Main Emergency Department (ED) plays a vital role in supporting the Medical Director to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care, effective operational management, and integration of the department’s academic and clinical missions. This position serves as a key leader in overseeing clinical operations, quality improvement, and faculty development, while also contributing to the department’s research and education efforts.

    Key Responsibilities

    Clinical Operations

     

    + Assist the Medical Director in managing the day-to-day operations of the emergency department, ensuring optimal patient flow, resource allocation, and adherence to clinical protocols.

    + Monitor and analyze key performance metrics, including patient satisfaction, throughput times, and provider productivity.

    + Collaborate with nursing leadership, hospital administration, and other clinical departments to address operational challenges and improve care delivery.

    + Participate in on-call rotations and provide direct clinical care in the ED.

     

    Quality Improvement

     

    + Lead quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety, reduce adverse events, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

    + Oversee incident reviews, root cause analyses, and the implementation of corrective action plans.

    + Promote a culture of continuous improvement and evidence-based practice among faculty and staff.

     

    Faculty Development and Leadership

     

    + Mentor and support junior faculty in clinical, educational, and academic growth.

    + Assist in the recruitment, onboarding, and evaluation of faculty, fellows and residents.

    + Provide leadership and guidance in implementing departmental policies and strategic initiatives.

     

    Academic and Educational Contributions

     

    + Contribute to the academic mission of the department by participating in research, education and scholarly activity.

    + Support the development and implementation of residency and fellowship training programs, ensuring alignment with ACGME and institutional standards.

    + Deliver lectures, lead workshops, and provide bedside teaching to medical students, and residents.

    Administrative Duties

    + Assist with the planning and execution of strategic goals, including expansion into community emergency departments.

    + Represent the department in institutional and external meetings as needed.

    Qualifications

    + **Education** : MD or DO degree with board certification in Emergency Medicine required.

    + **Experience** : Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience in an academic or high-volume emergency department. Prior leadership or administrative experience is valued.

    + **Skills** : Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Proficiency in data analysis and quality improvement methodologies is highly desirable

    + **Licensure** : Eligible for medical licensure in the state of employment.
