Job Function 01: General Knowledge Criteria- Has thorough knowledge of all department areas and their functions. Demonstrates ability to properly and safely operate all department equipment. Assures IAHCSMM, FDA, APIC, AAMI, OSHA, JCAHO and department policies and procedures are adhered to at all times. Demonstrates knowledge of fire, & disaster plans. Can direct staff in prioritizing their workload. Assures all equipment is referred to Clinical Engineering for safety check or repair when needed. Assumes responsibility for Sterrad sterilization, preparation, wrapping, documentation, biologicals etc. Performs all other duties / responsibilities as required or assigned (cleaning, teaching etc.). Assumes administrative coverage of the department.
Job Function: 02. Computer Skills Criteria: Is able to navigate the computer operating system to obtain information related to operative schedule and physician preference documents. Is able to locate sets, provide count sheets, track instruments set repairs, and produce labels. Assures adequate supply inventory and places electronic order as needed. Utilizes email system to provide updates and clear communication to other department staff members and OR Coordinators.
Job Function: 03. Inventory Management Criteria: Ensures adequate supplies are available for assembly of trays and case cart preparation. Maintains extra instruments to replace broken/dull instruments as needed. Performs audits on specialty instruments to ensure optimal instruments are available. Audits trays for correct inventory and reassembles tray when necessary. Collaborate w/ SPD/OR Coordinators to assure adequate par levels are maintained. Work with OR materials coordinator with the additions, deletions and revisions of instruments as needed. Maintains list of HMC and Vendor owned new and current surgical trays.
Job Function: 04. Organizational Skills Criteria: Maintains reference books with names of instruments. Maintains well organized, clean labeled bins in work-station instrument cabinets and case cart area. Maintains directory for locating instruments in cabinets and case cart area. Maintains log of all cases picked, including add on cases. Organizes the information on check sheets in the order that the instruments are assembled. Update check sheets whenever necessary. Present tray and case cart changes at staff meetings. Assures all instruments are properly handled and in proper location to maintain sterility. Assures and assists with cases being picked in a timely manner. Follows through on all special assignments to ensure completion.
Job Function: 05.Leadership Criteria: Demonstrates initiative in establishing priorities for instrument processing of one-of-a-kind trays and workflow of the department. Is a clear communicator and includes team members in the decision-making process whenever possible. Identifies problems and displays initiative to problem solve. Reports any problems or concerns to OR leadership. Assumes additional responsibilities/duties as needed (lead, staff). Provides feedback to employees related to job performance and evaluations. Demonstrates professionalism and projects positive image. Assists in completing new employees 3-month evaluations. Provides administrative coverage on weekends and holidays when assigned.
Job Function: 06. Liaison Criteria: Maintains a good rapport with Surgical Services personnel. Responds appropriately to concerns as needed. Keeps OR leadership informed about changes, issues or concerns. Reports noncompliance issues to OR leadership. Reports safety problems to OR leadership. Keeps up to date contact information of Vendors and manufacturers’ representatives. Maintains good working relationship with Vendors/ manufacturers’ representatives. Maintains a positive and professional attitude with staff and peers. Maintains confidentiality, and respect when dealing with work related staff issues.
Job Function: 07. Educator Criteria: Responsible for teaching all personnel proper care and handling of specialty instruments. Required to train all new employees on every area within the department. Training is done on a 1:1 basis for a minimum for 3 months on the shift staff is assigned. Utilizes reference material as a resource tool to assist with training. Responsible for maintaining Department Policy & Procedure manuals, maintains MSDS book for all chemicals in the department, required to complete the Hazardous Substance Inventory annually, maintains all Sterilization Records including steam, gas, and Sterrad/VPRO, and maintains biological books. Completes weekly Eye Wash Station Inspections and updates logbook. Setup all in-services for the department as needed.
Job Function: 08. Miscellaneous Educator Criteria: Provides telephone coverage for any area in the department. Responsible for updating and meeting with all on and off-site departments that have sterilization equipment in their areas. Responsible for maintaining all sterilization records for all on and off-site departments. Completes monthly statistics, including number of trays processed, cases picked, and employee error reports. Reports to OR leadership for review of error reports. Counsels and coaches SPD staff as needed
Job Function: 09. Other: All other duties assigned by the OR leadership team.
Job Function: 10. Documentation and communication skills: Maintains a good working relationship with all members of the healthcare team. Promotes positive public relations for the organization. Seeks guidance from peers and management as needed. Is receptive to change and constructive feedback. Maintains accurate records and logs related scope reprocessing and QA monitoring. Consistently tags scopes with required information.
Education/Experience
+ High School Degree required
+ Graduate of Sterile Processing Program
+ Certified Central Service Technician required (CBSPD or HSPA (IAHCSMM) certification)
+ SPD experience 3-5 years preferred
+ Current SPD leadership experience
+ CHL (Certified Healthcare Leader) certification strongly preferred.
