GROCERY NIGHT MANAGER
POSITION OVERVIEW
Responsible for overseeing store in its entirety after 5pm or in the absence of the Grocery Manager/Store Manager at any time of day. This individual will ensure the store is presentable, will address customer concerns and questions, will offer supervision to departmental employees who do not have a manager/assistant manager present, will work with all store employees to ensure the success of the store through excellent communication, customer service and demonstrated passion for the business.
Responsible for working closely with the Owners and Store Manager to ensure the success of the store and department through excellent communication, customer service, and a demonstrated passion for the business.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION/DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Provide excellent customer service by assisting customers and responding to any complaints in a professional manner
• Develops and implements localized merchandising plan for the department, sets up and creates displays for new and seasonal items as well as items that are tied-in with other department promotions
• Works with other department managers to develop and implement initiatives to help meet the financial objectives of the store; keeps Owners and Store Manager fully informed of these actions
• Identifies areas in the Grocery Department where improvement is required, then implements changes and procedures to address these needs
• Stays up to date on Grocery needs that arise daily, and special circumstances for holidays
• Maintains an inventory that is seasonal, appetizing and visually attractive
• Maintains an awareness of the demographics of customers in relation to the types of products offered to increase revenues
• Recognizes and responds to trends in the industry
• Ability to assess the competition and respond accordingly
• Ensures accurate and timely ordering, production level, and rotation to prevent product loss
• Manages department inventories by tracking weekly sales reports and orders product and supplies to meet customer needs and the company’s gross profit goals
• Prepares, maintains and tracks inventories to calculate gross weekly profits according to company guidelines
• Follows established departmental procedures for receiving merchandise including inspecting the product when delivered, pricing the product, and restocking cases to insure freshness and quality, accuracy and product rotation
• Creates and maintains a budget and profit planner
• Controls department expenses by improving operations and efficiencies, by controlling labor costs and by reducing losses due to shrinkage and pilferage
• Schedules Grocery Department employees, oversees and assists with their training
• Rewards and recognizes staff performance and delegates their work assignments to effectively utilize their talents and abilities.
• Maintains accurate records on all important matters, including staff performance, corrective action, sales plans, etc.
• Maintains effective housekeeping program
• Keeps merchandise clean and fresh to meet all health department regulations, pass sanitation inspections and meet company standards
• Ensure that Grocery Department employees always work and operate equipment in a safe manner, complying with OSHA requirements; enforces safety, health, and security rules
• Ensures compliance with local, state, and government weights and measures laws
• Performs duties of staff as needed and other related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Knowledge of state and federal health/labeling regulations
• Experience and knowledge with USDA regulations, COOL rules, and OSHA standards
• Knowledge of perishables/Grocery is required
• Excellent communication and leadership skills; team building, leading by example, hands-on approach,
training, clear expectations, and follow-up with staff
• Basic math skills for ordering and inventory
• Strong multi-tasking and problem-solving skills
• Must be highly motivated with a sense of urgency and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with all levels of employees and minimum supervision
• Strong interpersonal skills; open door policy with staff, build relationships with vendors and customers, and handle disciplinary actions with professionalism
• Strong organizational skills
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
• High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 2-3 years experience working in a grocery retail setting required; previous management experience in the retail, Grocery or restaurant industry preferred
• Experience executing goals, effectively creating change, and increasing efficiencies
• Appropriate food handler’s certification

+ Requires transferring product either horizontally or vertically of up to 50 pounds
