    Department Summary

    The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is an accredited research and professional school serving approximately 2,500 undergraduates and 100 graduate students both on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the George S. Turnbull Center in Portland. Degrees offered are the BA, BS, MA, MS and Ph.D. The SOJC also offers one graduate certificate, and several undergraduate minors and contributes courses to other UO majors such as Cinema Studies and General Social Science. The School is one of the oldest journalism programs in the nation, founded in 1916.

    Position Summary

    Under the supervision of the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) Associate Dean for Portland, the Academic Tech Operations (Ops) Manager oversees the production facilities and equipment used to support academic programs and research at SOJC - Portland.

    Serving as the key instructional production specialist within the SOJC-Portland, the Academic Ops Manager will:

    • Supervise student employees in the camera equipment checkout room, the Oregon Reality immersive media lab, and the production studio.

    • Manage SOJC’s production facilities and services

    • Advise program directors, OR Lab managers, and Associate Dean for Portland on the budget for SOJC -Portland Academic Ops for staff, equipment and facilities and related systems

    • Provide project management as needed for projects related to technologies utilized by SOJC-Portland programs, with specific focus on media production projects.

    • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Portland to establish and maintain documentation and practices that align with SOJC-Portland’s curriculum.

    • Work to keep SOJC Academic Ops equipment and facilities relevant to students, course instruction, and faculty research.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor's Degree*

    • Three years' experience of increasing responsibility in production technologies related to the duties above

    *Eight years' experience of increasing responsibility in production technologies related to the duties above can substitute for degree.

    Professional Competencies

    • Strong background in related academic/production technologies such as principles and practices of television production and photography; operation and maintenance of video, audio and lighting equipment; methods and techniques of video production and broadcast production techniques; methods and techniques of immersive media production techniques; industry quality standards; computer-based editing systems.

    • Excellent communication skills, including regularly sharing project statuses, risks, issues and timelines with SOJC Leadership, students, and faculty. Must have the ability to translate technical information to non-technical end users.

    • Strong customer-service orientation and organizational skills.

    • Strong time management and prioritization skills.

    • Ability to administer regulations, policies, and procedures effectively and supervise in a culturally diverse workplace.

    • Ability and/or commitment to working with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds in an inclusive, welcoming environment.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Supervisory experience

    • Professional experience in production field

    • Proven experience in successfully advancing technology services in higher ed context
