Responsible for providing surgical assistance in the exposure, hemostasis, cannulation, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for patients. The surgical assistants perform preoperative and postoperative duties as well as during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations. Provides surgical assistance in the operating room under the direction of a registered nurse or other designated operating room supervisor. Assists with departmental support activities following hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and standards of care.

Responsibilities:

* Prepares and sets up operating room.

* Assists surgical team during operative procedures.

* Assists with terminal cleaning of operating rooms between cases.

* Completes and maintains records, reports, and other documentation related to the work, including risk management and performance improvement reports.

* Participates in cost containment and quality assurance programs.

Required:

* High school diploma or equivalent

* Successful completion of a Surgical Technologist program or equivalent experience.

* Completion of a surgical assistants program accredited through Association of Surgical Assistants (ASA).

* American Heart Association BLS certification as Healthcare Provider or equivalent through the Military Training Network (MTN).

* Certified Surgical Technologist and Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant (CSTFA) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Tech First Assisting (NBSTSA).
