Summary
Under the general direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager, in accordance with the practice standards established by the Nursing Organization and by the specific unit/department in accordance with the rules, and regulations and/ or standards established by the State Board of Nursing, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Accreditation and appropriate specialty organizations relevant to the patient population under care, t he Health Unit Coordinator assists with managing the flow of admissions and unit specific administrative needs. The Health Unit Coordinator represents the organization in a positive manner, frequently interacting with medical providers, nursing staff, patient family members and visitors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
+ Supports and promotes the mission and values of Covenant Health Ministry.
+ Assist with admissions process within the Electronic Health Record (EHR), collaborating with the House Supervisor (HS) and Charge RN.
+ Inform the primary RN when the admission orders are entered for hand off report.
+ Assemble and label patient chart.
+ Place prior advanced directive on chart.
+ Make sure cardiac patients have telemetry monitor assigned if applicable and notify RN of expiring orders.
+ Assemble necessary forms, copy chart and book ambulance if necessary to external facilities.
+ Prepare chart and gather paperwork for discharge or transfer to other units in the hospital.
+ Schedule follow up appointments and outpatient testing.
+ Discharge patients from computer census and disassemble chart for medical records.
+ Maintain supply of chart forms, desk supplies and make packets as needed.
+ Maintain charts by thinning and adding forms as needed.
+ Send/retrieve mail and and distribute.
+ Helps answer patient call lights and may assist the RN/LNA with transport as needed within the scope of the health unit coordinator.
+ Demonstrates knowledge of standard precautions, life safety codes, hospital wide codes and all safety policies.
+ Promotes a clean, safe and orderly environment.
+ Miscellaneous administrative projects for unit or nurse manager.
+ Maintain patient census log and board.
+ Maintain call schedules and keep list daily of patients off floor for testing.
+ File forms and reports in charts.
+ Assists with recording unit/dept. statistics.
+ Prioritize orders and tasks with direct admissions known stats as priority items in collaboration with the RN.
+ Knowledge of medical terminology, symbols and abbreviations.
+ Prepare surgical and pre- procedure charts and process post procedure/post op charts.
+ Enter patient daily charges DTAR.
+ Notify staff and departments of stat orders.
+ Notify nurses when blood ready for transfusion.
+ Request services from ancillary and support departments for supplies or equipment.
+ Request food trays, stat meds, old records, patient’s valuables from safe etc.
+ Request patient consent for information or films from external facilities.
+ Assist with timekeeping if designated.
+ Comply with regulatory agency guidelines/rules.
+ Assist with 15-minute patient checks and 1:1’s for safety.
+ Abide by HIPA regulations when receiving phone calls or visitor requests for patient information.
+ Restrict access to patient information, chart, computer, and otherwise.
+ Refer patient to patient advocate to assist in patient satisfaction.
+ Assist with patients who want advanced directives initiated or spiritual care.
+ Send and receive documents by fax.
+ Answer and disperse phone calls, in a professional and friendly manner.
+ Attends Health Unit Coordinator and department meetings
+ Maintains computer census.
+ Enters orders and follows established computer downtime procedures.
+ Access labs, radiology reports, and other data as required.
+ Generate reports and patient education materials.
+ Register patient into telemetry monitoring system.
+ Notify RN if monitor alarms sound immediately
+ Duplicate documents using copy machine.
+ Transport specimens using pneumatic tube.
+ Assist with malfunctioning equipment. Maintain log of all equipment that has gone out for repair and when it has returned to the department for use.
+ Report problems with computers and office equipment to ITS.
+ Attends all mandatory training as assigned within the timeframe given
+ Other duties as consistent with this role.
Job Requirements
Job Knowledge and Skills
+ Medical terminology and computer skills preferred.
+ Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training preferred or obtained prior to completion of orientation
Education and Experience
+ Currently enrolled in high school, High School Diploma or GED required
+ 1-2 years' experience as a receptionist/secretary preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with this position that involves a combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching. Occasional lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs. Some stress related to high level of responsibility for quality care.
