    + Introduction

     

    Inland Ambient Monitoring Program - Seasonal Help

     

    + The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Bureau of Water Protection and Land Reuse, Inland Ambient Monitoring Program is currently seeking to fill multiple Seasonal Resource Assistant positions at our Windsor Water Lab in Windsor, Connecticut with some field work conducted statewide.

    + Schedule: Thirty-five (35) hours per week, Monday - Friday. Early morning and/or late-night hours required when performing fieldwork. Typically begins late spring and continues through the summer or fall. Anticipated Duration: Up to six (6) months and no more than 1,040 hours.

    + Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.

    Responsibilities include:

    + Conducting water quality sampling at state park beaches, lakes and ponds, and rivers and streams;

    + Field collection of fish and macro-invertebrate samples;

    + Water temperature probe deployment;

    + Laboratory preparation of samples;

    + Use and calibration of water quality monitoring instruments;

    + Data quality assurance and entry;

    + Literature searches;

    + Data Analysis;

    + Maintenance and cleanup of the laboratory, instruments, equipment, vehicles and boats; and

    + Performs other related duties as required.

    + If selected for interview, applicants will be contacted by the divisions hiring supervisor anticipated for March/April of 2025.

    + Employment is contingent upon completion of a background check, which includes a review of employment, criminal and motor vehicle.

    PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Seasonal Resource Assistants with the Inland Ambient Monitoring Program will assist with a variety of duties, such as: Conducting water quality sampling at state park beaches, lakes and ponds, and rivers and streams; Field collection of fish and macro-invertebrate samples; Water temperature probe deployment; Laboratory preparation of samples; Use and calibration of water quality monitoring instruments; Data quality assurance and entry; Literature searches; Data Analysis; Maintenance and cleanup of the laboratory, instruments, equipment, vehicles and boats; Performs other duties as required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

    Ability to follow instructions.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + The ideal candidate would have: College level course work and/or experience in one or more of the following: water quality monitoring, aquatic biology, limnology, ecology, microbiology, entomology, and environmental science; Mechanical experience; Experience with personal computers; Experience with boating; Experience with GIS; Experience with R or Python programming languages.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    + Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

    + Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

    + Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

    + Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

    + College training in a specific field.

    + Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific state facilities.

    + Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    + Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

    + Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
