    Duties Description Ringside Physicians protect the health and safety of combatants engaged in combat sports contests and exhibitions. As a Ringside Physician, you may perform duties including but not limited to the following:Pre-Bout (Weigh-In)• Conduct pre-bout physical examinations.• Review combatant medical records at weigh-in. • Identify medical contraindications to combat sports participation, and communicate findings to the Chief Medical Officer and other Commission Directors. Pre-Bout Duties (At the Arena)• Perform brief examinations of all combatants and referees to follow-up on unresolved medical issues during weigh-in, and to verify that there are no significant changes in medical status since weigh-in. • Identify emergency medical services (EMS) staff and verify that staff can provide advanced life support (ALS). Verify that at least one ambulance and paramedic are present.• Determine optimal locations for the EMS team and its equipment, and identify and confirm evaluation routes for any injured combatants requiring emergency transport from the ring, cage, or locker room. • Identify the Level I trauma center that will be utilized in case of medical emergency, and confirm that the center was contacted and informed of the event. Confirm that a neurosurgeon is on call or available. In areas without a Level I trauma center in close proximity, identify and confirm that the closest hospital was notified of the event, and verify that neurosurgical services are available. • Accompany referees during fighter rules meetings and review medical services in place. Intra-Bout Duties• Evaluate combatants between rounds and communicate with the referee. • Terminate bouts if there is a risk that the health or wellbeing of combatants would be significantly jeopardized. • Observe the activity of combatants, identify and manage medical emergencies, and notify emergency services to enter the ring or cage. • Complete injury reports for combatants sustaining medical injuries. Post-Bout Duties• Identify combatant injuries or medical problems using a post-bout form. • Notify Athletic Commission officials if combatants are medically cleared.• Complete discharge forms, including information regarding suspensions, if applicable. • Provide insurance forms to combatants after injury reports are filed. Discuss signs and symptoms of traumatic injury with combatants and representatives. Document discussion of topics. • Complete supplemental forms for cerebral injuries.

     

    Minimum Qualifications Possession of a valid, unrestricted, license to practice medicine in New York State (MD or DO), and certification or eligibility for certification in a medical specialty by a Member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Preferred Qualifications Experience as a ringside physician is preferred but not required. All medical specialties are considered. Physicians that possess a board certification in neurology are desired.

     

    Additional Comments Ringside Physicians are compensated at a per diem rate of $500 per weigh-in or event. Hours vary based on weigh-in and event scheduling. Opportunities are available throughout New York State. Candidates must be willing to travel to weigh-ins, events, and for training. Candidates must also be cleared by the New York State Athletic Commission’s Medical Advisory Board prior to employment, and on a recurring basis.
