GENERAL SUMMARY: Surgical Assistant (SA) works under the supervision and direction of the operating surgeon and in collaboration with the health care team members, to carry out technical behaviors that assist the surgeon in performing a safe operative procedure. If Certified SA (CSA), the national certification is to be maintained. A copy of the national certification documentation will be maintained in the employee's file. The SA possesses a working knowledge of operating room procedures with respect to attire, infection control and regulatory compliance. The SA performs other surgical team duties, such as, scrub/ turnover, and other duties as assigned when not functioning in the role of the first assistant. As a member of the HFHS staff, daily assignments will be made based on departmental need. The SA must have the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon, other team members and the patient, with respect to the requirements of a particular surgical procedure. The SA must maintain procedure knowledge related to normal /abnormal anatomy; ability to anticipate and provide for potential complications; confirms that instrumentation is appropriate for patient, age, and size. Reports directly to the OR Director/Manager and/or assigned specialty team leadership. The daily contact with medical, residents, administrative, nursing support staff and vendors will be collegial, professional and in accordance with HFHS customer service and service excellence standards.
+ About the Role:
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Surgical Assistant (FA) to join our surgical team. The FA works directly under the supervision of the operating surgeon, collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure safe and efficient surgical procedures. This position requires a perioperative experienced Surgical Technologist who has successfully completed a CAAHEP-accredited first assistant training program.
Responsibilities:
+ Provide first assistant support to surgeons during surgical procedures.
+ Maintain a sterile field and manage instrumentation effectively.
+ Anticipate the surgeon's needs and proactively address potential complications.
+ Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy, and physiology.
+ Perform scrub/turnover duties and other assigned tasks as needed.
+ Adhere to strict infection control protocols and regulatory requirements.
+ Foster a collaborative and professional environment with colleagues, physicians, and staff.
+ Maintain BLS certification and CSA certification (required within one year of hire).
+ Participate in on-call rotation, including potential coverage at other HFHS facilities.
Qualifications - External
Qualifications:
+ Perioperative experience as a Surgical Technologist.
+ Graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited first assistant training program.
+ Certification as a CFA by the NBSTSA (desired upon hire, required within one year).
+ Current BLS certification.
+ Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic surgical environment.
+ Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
+ Flexibility to work various shifts, including on-call, holidays, and potential coverage at other HFHS facilities.
2+ years of First Assistant experience and current certifications are required.
