    FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

    The Modern Languages Unit of the Humanities Department at Hostos Community College/CUNY, seeks an experienced and dynamic individual as Assistant Professor of Spanish to start in the Fall of 2025. The successful candidate will be qualified to teach any course among Hostos’ significant offerings in the field, including language courses for beginners and intermediate learners, Spanish for heritage speakers, composition and literature for native speakers, Spanish for healthcare workers, and general Humanities courses in Spanish. The new Assistant Professor in Spanish will also be expected to lead the revamping of Hostos’ Spanish curriculum and the development of new offerings, including a program in Spanish-English translation and interpretation. In addition to teaching and curriculum development, responsibilities include research, administrative and supervisory duties. This is a tenure-track position and is on-campus/in-person.

     

    A Hispanic-serving institution, Eugenio María de Hostos Community College/CUNY, located in the South Bronx, was created in 1968 in response to demands from the Hispanic and Puerto Rican community, and it is the first institution of higher education in the US mainland to be named after a Puerto Rican.The Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture (HCAC) is one of the pre-eminent Latinx arts centers of the northeast. The HCAC has distinguished itself for showcasing traditional art forms, as well as emerging and internationally renowned artists. Hostos also houses the Latin American Writers Institute, founded at City College in 1987, an organization devoted to promoting Latin American, Latinx, and Ibero-American literature in the US and across borders. LAWI publishes Hostos Review / Revista Hostosiana, a multilingual literary journal dedicated to promoting, showcasing and disseminating the richness and plurality of Latin American, Latinx and Ibero-American literary production in the US.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. The following qualifications are preferred:

     

    Doctorate in Spanish or related field at the time of appointment.

     

    Evidence of engaging and effective teaching.

     

    Experience teaching diverse populations.

     

    Experience with translation and interpretation.

     

    Evidence of scholarly publication.

     

    Experience teaching community college population.

     

    Experience with assessment and/or curriculum development.

     

    Experience teaching some of the following classes: translation Studies, Spanish-English Translation and Interpretation, Spanish for Healthcare, Spanish for Legal Professionals, Spanish for Business, Creative Writing in Spanish.

    COMPENSATION

    $72,667 - $86,645; Salary commensurate with education and experience. CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development.
