    Join Our Team as a Children's Librarian!

     

    Sterling Municipal Library is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Children's Librarian to spark interest, foster a love of reading, and bring exciting programs to life for children and families!     In this role, you’ll plan, facilitate, and evaluate engaging programs that inspire young readers and support early literacy development. You’ll also curate a vibrant and dynamic collection, ensuring our materials meet the evolving needs of our community. Collaboration is key—you’ll work closely with families, educators, and local organizations to make the library a welcoming and enriching space for all.

     

    Beyond programming, you’ll play a vital role in helping patrons navigate library services and technology, including public computers, printing, scanning, faxing, and digital resources. Strong tech skills and a commitment to exceptional customer service are essential for ensuring all visitors can fully access and enjoy our library’s offerings.

    This is a supervisory role within the organization of our library. The schedule is 40 hours per week, including weekends and evenings. This position reports directly to the Programming and Marketing Lead Librarian.

    Duties

    When assigned to Children's Services :

    + Plans, presents, and evaluates developmentally appropriate children’s library programming, story times, tours, and readers' advisory services to children and families.

    + Evaluates, selects, and maintains an age-appropriate children's collection, including print, digital, and multimedia resources as well as recommending new and replacement materials.

    + Represents the library at community events, collaborating with schools, early childhood centers, and local organizations to promote library services, collections and programs.

    + Assists the public in using library materials and equipment, general reference services, responding to inquiries, directing readers to research materials, and other items regarding library use. Exhibits a strong commitment to positive customer service when working with all library patrons.

    + Supervises, mentors, and provides guidance to assigned staff, ensuring the effective delivery of children’s programs and services.

    + Administers library in absence of senior professional staff members.

    + Performs all other related duties as assigned.

    When assigned to Reference:

    + Executes general reference services; responds to inquiries, directs readers to research materials, instructs in library skills, facilitates interlibrary loan service.

    + Assists in Young People's Department, conducts tours, reference, readers' advisory service, and instructs in library skills; provides community programs.

    + Plans and implements programs, publicity, and public relations activities designed to inform and attract readers and promote the library. Compiles bibliographies, prepares grant applications, and updates web information. Participates in community expositions (business, health, education).

    + Assists in decisions concerning materials selection and retention (books, periodicals, equipment, audio-visual, pamphlets, clippings, etc.).

    + Administers library in absence of senior professional staff members.

    + Performs all other related duties as assigned.

    When assigned to Teen Services:

    + Executes general reference services; responds to inquiries, directs readers to research materials, and instructs in library skills.

    + Works with youth services and reference teams to conduct tours, readers' advisory service, library skill instruction, and community programming to teens.

    + Plans and implements programs, publicity, and public relations activities designed to inform and attract readers and promote the library. Compiles bibliographies, prepares grant applications, updates Website. Participates in community expositions (business, health, education).

    + Assists in decisions concerning materials selection and retention (books, periodicals, equipment, audio-visual, digital content etc.).

    + Organizes and meets regularly with teen advisory boards, teen volunteers, teen book club etc.

    + Administers library in absence of senior professional staff members.

    + Performs all other related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Required:

    + Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or institution in Library Science, Education, or a related field.

    + Weekend and evening availability.

    OR

    + An equivalent combination of education, experience, certification and/or licenses sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

    Preferred:

    + Library, Education, or Public Service experience.

    + Master’s Degree from an accredited college or institution in Library Science, Education, or a related field.

    + Familiarity with reading levels, early literacy development, and children's book recommendations.

    + Bilingual (English/Spanish).

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

     

    + Basic understanding of current and emerging library technology, service and programming trends, and public library issues.

    + Professional knowledge in areas such as public services, reader’s advisory, collection development, and group programming.

    + Knowledge of the major fields of learning comprises social sciences, natural science, and humanities.

    + Sound judgment in addressing behavioral issues, including those related to mental health or policy violations, while maintaining a welcoming and safe library environment.

    + Skilled in operating a personal computer, Microsoft Office Suite applications, and the use of electronic resources as used in libraries.

    + Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    + Excellent customer service and communication skills.
