    Position Description:

    The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Edward J. Whitacre College of Engineering at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month Lecturer to begin 2025 position to begin 9/1/25. This position is part of the departments and college’s increasing focus on hand-on education and design at the undergraduate level. Therefore, strong preference will be given to candidates with a background in industrial design, design research, and/or engineering education. Teaching duties will focus on courses in the Mechanical Engineering design curriculum and specifically the Mechanical Engineering Sections of Introduction to Design. In addition, candidates will be expected to perform internal service and provide leadership/mentoring to student groups.

    + The Lecturer title designates a full-time, non-tenure-acquiring role with primary duties in teaching organized classes and/or instructional labs. In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate level.

    + Candidates will be expected to teach courses in the Mechanical Engineering design sequence as well as other core courses in the undergraduate program, mentor undergraduate student groups/activities, and provide service to the department, college, and university.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

    + Terminal Degree (PhD) in in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Education, or closely related field.

    + Previous experience in industrial/commercial design or academic research related to design.

    + Teaching experience in higher education.

    + Demonstrated experience in mentoring students or student groups.

    + Experience with, competency, or certification in relevant industry standard software (e.g. AutoCAD, Solidworks, etc…)

    + P.E. License

    + Experience in Aerospace Industry preferred.

    About the College:

    The Whitacre College of Engineering (WCOE, https://www.depts.ttu.edu/coe/) serves approximately 4800 undergraduate and 1300 graduate students, supported by 220 faculty and instructors. The college had 852 BS, 557 MS and 68 PhD graduates in the 2023-24 fiscal year. All incoming first year students are enrolled into a common foundational curriculum for all undergraduate programs. Foundational students declare a program of choice and can move into upper division after completing the foundational classes with a TTU GPA of 2.5 or higher. The WCOE consists of the Departments of Chemical Engineering; Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering; Computer Science; Electrical & Computer Engineering; Industrial, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; and Petroleum Engineering. All BS programs and the Environmental Engineering Master’s program are ABET accredited. All departments have Master’s and PhD programs. Annual research expenditures of the college are around $18M.

    The Department of Mechanical Engineering awarded 295 undergraduate, 40 MS and 15 PhD degrees in AY 2023-24. Department enrollment includes 1514 undergraduate students and 144 graduate students. Among the 33 tenure-track, tenured, research professors and professors of practice, roughly 30% are women and minorities. In recent years, department faculty have been awarded nearly 4 million dollars in externally sponsored research, of which 70% were from federal sources. Faculty are known for cited work on bio-inspired devices, computational mechanics, vortex dynamics, turbulence, microfluidics, nanoimprinting, physiological microstructure and translational nutrition, cardiovascular dynamics, nanomedicine, energetic and biological materials, and robust control methods.
