    Research Position Enhanced Rock Weathering, Reaction and Transport in Deep Soil

    The UW Hydro-Biogeochemical Research Group in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering is hiring a **researcher** to assist in an enhance rock weathering (ERW) project. ERW is a promising carbon dioxide removal approach. The project is part of a larger collaboration between the University of Washington, University of Guelph, Yale University, and UNDO, an ERW start-up company. The UW team is focused on understanding belowground chemical reactions and transport of weathering products in deep soil.

     

    **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Fieldwork (10%)

    + Manage installation of instruments into soil profiles at a ERW field sites located in Ontario Canada.

    + Coordinate with site collaborators to ensure field efforts are complementary and successful.

    + Organize visits to field sites to collect samples and offload data.Data Interpretation (20%)

    + Process and plot chemical and hydrologic data collected from soil profiles.

    + Analyze and interpret data to test hypotheses about processes occurring within the soil.Model Development (25%)

    + Design and develop reactive transport models that capture site processes.

    + Test and calibrate models against site data to ensure they are accurate.Model Use (25%)

    + Use developed model to estimate net CO2 sequestration once weathering products leave the rooting zone.

    + Develop hypotheses and use model to test how altered conditions (e.g., water management scenarios, rock loading rates, etc.) influence the amount of net CO2 sequestered.Communication (20%)

    + Generate presentations and manuscripts describing results from data interpretation and model efforts.It is expected the researcher will work independently with general guidance from the project leader and will have the capacity to problem solve, develop hypotheses, draw conclusions, and present findings orally and in writing.The current position is funded for 1 year. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**

    + Bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education/experience. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**

    + Fieldwork experience.

    + Experience processing and analyzing chemical and hydrologic data.

    + Knowledge of unsaturated soil hydrology.

    + Understanding of carbonate chemistry, soil cation exchange, and precipitation reactions.

    + Experience with reactive transport models.
