Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE
Reporting to the Vice President for University Student Life, the Exec. Director, Student Life – Identity, Belonging, and Community Engagement plays a visible, highly collaborative, and dynamic role as a member of the Student Life Senior Leadership Team and works jointly with campus partners to support student success and well-being, ensuring that all students feel valued and empowered. The ideal candidate will play a significant role as a key thought partner to advance the Office of Student Life priorities, such as leading initiatives that foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity for all students from diverse backgrounds, managing programs that promote community engagement, and actively working to address equity concerns across the university. Specifically, the Exec Director manages a portfolio and provides key direction and supervision for three identity and cultural centers: The Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center, LGBTQ Life, and Religious and Spiritual Life, which provide services focused on intercultural awareness, gender and sexuality issues, religious diversity, and have a deep commitment to social justice and an intersectional approach to the student life experience. This position will serve as key advisor and counsel to members of the Bias Response Team and chairs a university-wide roundtable that will assist in fostering a strong sense of community through identity-based student leadership development, campus-wide events, and initiatives that encourage interaction between students, staff, faculty, alumni affinity groups, and the broader community.
ESSENTIAL FUNTIONS
Overall Strategic Leadership (15%)
+ Serves as a key advisor to University leadership on matters related to student identity, inclusion, and cultural engagement.
+ Develops and implements comprehensive strategies and oversight that promote identity development, belonging, and community engagement.
+ Maintains a collaborative bridgebuilder mentality and has significant experience supervising, coaching, mentoring, and developing their team members to positively impact and enhance the student experience.
+ Utilizes evidence-based strategies and practices in their work and ability to demonstrate their experience utilizing and staying abreast of best practices designed to enhance student engagement and community-building efforts.
+ Provides leadership for identity-based student training and services (including the development, implementation, and assessment of activities) that significantly enhance a commitment to creating a sense of belonging on campus.
+ In collaboration with the Senior Student Life Team, provides oversight for advancing strategic priorities for University Student Life and its alignment with the University’s _Boundless Possibility 2030 Strategic Plan_ for all undergraduate and graduate students across all UR schools.
Staff Supervision (15%)
+ Supervises three leaders through a cultural humility and identity-conscious lens while providing support of fiscal management, facilities, and programmatic efforts.
+ Provides strategic leadership to and partners with the three leaders to develop a shared strategic plan that promotes an overall roadmap for identity-based education and student leadership development. Hires, evaluates performance, recommends salary adjustments, and oversees coaching opportunities based on the University’s established guidelines.
+ Manages a portfolio of three departments: Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center, LGBTQ Life, and Spiritual & Religious Life.
+ Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center: Supports all students from diverse backgrounds and facilitates identity development, explores intercultural awareness, encourages cultural understanding and appreciation, and promotes dialogue across difference.
+ LGBTQ Life: Creates a safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQ students through programming, events, advocacy, education, and support services.
+ Religious and Spiritual Life: Facilitates opportunities for students to explore their spirituality and connect with faith communities while encouraging interfaith dialogues and events.
Policy and Crisis Management
+ Serves as key advisor and counsel to members of the Bias Response Team that has representatives and decision makers from all UR schools.
+ Provides strategic oversight for staff who triage bias reports that may contribute to creating an unsafe environment or have a negative psychological, social, emotional, or physical impact on an individual, group, or larger UR community.
+ Utilizes student affiliated bias incident data to educate, provide guidance, and activate campus leaders when incidents of bias impact the UR community.
+ Works collaboratively to develop and manage the University’s response to various student-related crisis and is knowledgeable about issues related to confidentiality, student conduct, and federal policy.
+ Provides recommendations for campus climate and institutional policies and procedures.
Liaison Activities
+ Fosters strategic partnerships with key leaders from across the University on holistic approaches to building a cohesive community and creating a sense of belonging for undergraduate and graduate students from all UR schools.
+ Liaises with the Office of Equity and Inclusion for campus climate issues, restorative initiatives, and campus education.
+ Chairs the University-Wide Roundtable which has representatives from all UR schools and is a student-centered forum by which intersectional identities, in all its complexity and multi-faceted dimensions, can be discussed, supported, and affirmed.
Regularly participates in:
+ Serves as the Vice President for University Student Life’s Division representative on various University-wide standing committees as assigned.
+ Contributes to the develop an overall plan and strategy for University Student Life.
+ Represents Student Life at university events and panels as well as alumni and community facing events.
+ University Student Life meetings and university-wide committees related to job responsibilities.
Budget Management
+ Advances donor relationships for the Office of University Student Life, and direct reports alongside the University of Rochester Alumni, Engagement, and Development to enhance intercultural, intersectional, and identity-based programming, events, and initiatives.
+ Consults with direct reports to ensure proper allocation of expenses and revenues, including operating budgets, donations, and grants.
+ Responsible for managing over $1M in expenses and revenues for the Associate Vice President for Student Life - Identity, Belonging, and Community Engagement Office, in addition to, providing support for the existing operating budgets for the three Centers, donor and gift accounts associated with identity-based programming, and the University-Wide Roundtable Budget.
Professional Development
+ Actively participates in professional organizations, preferably in a leadership capacity, at regional, state, and national professional organizations pertinent to the field.
+ Participates in research and professional writing, publications, and/or presentations.

QUALIFICATIONS
+ Master’s Degree required.

+ 8years of increasingly responsible and higher levels of student life management experience within higher education required.
+ Ability to serve the needs of students from a range of diverse backgrounds, use sound judgment, handle complex situations with sensitivity and objectivity, and work under pressure required.
+ Ability to work effectively with multiple constituencies, including students, staff, faculty, parents, alumni, and other community members, and represent the Office of University Student Life with professionalism required.
+ Experience managing a professional staff required.
+ Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and analytical skills required.
+ Knowledge of identity, belonging, and community engagement issues that affect student success required.
+ Demonstrated ability to be sensitive to and understand the needs of students from intersectional and diverse backgrounds required.
+ Occasional evening and weekend commitments for student life events and community engagement will be required.
