    The **Veteran Bridge Inspection Technician in Training (Active-Duty Military Only)** position at WSP USA is a unique 3-year development opportunity designed specifically for veterans transitioning into civilian careers. This role offers hands-on field experience, virtual learning, and mentorship to equip veterans with the necessary skills to become future Bridge Inspection Technicians. Successful technicians will play a crucial role in assessing the safety and integrity of transportation structures while developing leadership skills and technical expertise.

    Your Impact

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Bridge Inspection & Assessment:

    2. Assist in inspecting bridges and transportation structures using various technologies (sensors, NDT equipment) to assess their condition.

    3. Apply knowledge of Simple Bridge Plans & Specifications, Basic Bridge Types, and Basic Bridge Components to ensure compliance with safety standards.

    4. Use Inspection Equipment to evaluate material deterioration, Material Properties, and structural integrity.

    5. Understand and apply Bridge Loads, Structural Steel Shapes, and Bridge Nomenclature during inspections.

    6. Field Training & Hands-On Learning:

    7. Work alongside senior team members in the field to inspect a variety of bridge types and gain practical experience with Field Sketching, Field Measurements, and Topographic Maps & Site Plans.

    8. Gain familiarity with Concrete Structure Inspection, Steel Structure Inspection, and Timber Structure Inspection to evaluate different materials.

    9. Develop skills in Underwater Inspection, Water Safety, and Inspection at Heights.

    10. Safety & Compliance:

    11. Follow OSHA safety regulations and use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to maintain safe working conditions.

    12. Apply knowledge of Job Safety, First Aid Procedures, and Temporary Traffic Control to ensure a secure working environment for the team and the public.

    13. Leadership & Team Collaboration:

    14. Develop Basic Communication Skills and Leadership abilities while assisting Team Leaders in coordinating and executing inspections.

    15. Use Written Documentation skills to report findings and ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.

    16. Foster a positive team dynamic while learning from experienced leaders in the field.

    17. Virtual Training & Professional Development:

    18. Participate in virtual training on advanced inspection techniques, Principles of Load Rating and Posting, Bridge Inspection Manuals, Virtis Load Rating Software, and other related topics.

    19. Gain knowledge of Plans and Specifications, Intermediate Mathematics, and Basic Physical Science to enhance technical proficiency in the inspection process.

    20. Reporting & Documentation:

    21. Assist in preparing Inspection Reports, documenting findings, and ensuring all findings are clearly communicated using Report Information and Bridge Inspection Manuals.

    22. Utilize Measuring Devices and other field data collection tools to record accurate information during inspections.

    Training & Development:

    + Duration: 90-day initial training followed by 15 months of hands-on learning.

    + Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:40 PM.

    + Training Includes:

    + Classroom instruction on Bridge Types, Basic Drafting, Bridge Loads, Bridge Nomenclature, Structural Analysis, and more.

    + Field-based learning with mentorship from experienced inspectors.

    + Virtual training sessions covering Advanced Inspection Techniques, Engineering Principles, and Project Management.

    Who You Are

    Minimum Requirements:

    + Military Experience: Open to active-duty military members, preferably with a background in technical fields. Must have authorization and approval from a unit commander to participate in the SkillBridge program.

    + Education: High school diploma; college coursework in civil engineering or related fields.

    + Physical Requirements: Ability to perform continuous field work including working at heights and in close quarters, climbing, carrying ladders and gear, working in various types of weather conditions, etc.

    + Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record for site travel.

    + Technical Aptitude: Familiarity with construction, engineering, or inspection tools.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with CAD software for drafting and design.

    + Associate Degree in Civil Technology or BS in Civil Engineering is preferred.

    + Prior experience in Construction, Civil Engineering, or infrastructure inspection.

    + Strong understanding of Bridge Plans and Specifications, Material Properties, and Structural Analysis.

    + Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

    + Ability to work effectively in team settings, collaborating with others to accomplish goals.

    + Physically capable of performing continuous fieldwork, including climbing, carrying ladders and gear, and working in various conditions.
