    Payload Rack Officer

     

    Full-Time in Hunstville, AL - MO&I

     

    This Payload Rack Officer position is an entry-level Payload Operations Integration Center (POIC) flight controller that manages the Expedite the Processing of Experiments to Space Station (EXPRESS) Racks that are located onboard the International Space Station (ISS), the Window Observation Research Facility (WORF) Rack, the Minus Eighty Degree Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI), and EXPRESS Logistic Carrier (ELC) facilities located externally to the ISS. The EXPRESS and WORF Racks and ELCs contain experiments that are operated by science teams to gain various types of scientific and operational knowledge. In order to satisfactorily support science operations, the PRO position requires knowledge in electrical, thermal, power, and command systems and is responsible for maintaining an in-depth knowledge of the rack facilities and their interfaces to ISS systems for configuring, monitoring and managing their operation during real-time operations. This knowledge is gained through an extensive training program that leads to PRO Flight Controller certification. During real time operations, the PRO is a member of a cadre of flight controllers who report to the Payload Operations Director (POD) and coordinates onboard rack-related activities with flight controllers at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) and with International Partner (IP) flight controllers from the European and Japanese Space Agencies. The PRO console position is staffed by certified PRO flight controllers, 24-hrs/day, and 7-days/week.

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

    Associate degree or the equivalent in basic engineering, plus a minimum of two years applicable experience.

    Strongly Preferred:

    An understanding of systems engineering is also desired.

     

    The candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be committed to the rigors of an in-depth training program and subsequent role as an ISS Flight Controller. The candidate must be a motivated self-starter who can work with minimal guidance and oversight once clear objectives are established.
