    Do you like to take things apart and put them back together? Are you intrigued by electricity and eager to gain experience? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, this opportunity is for you!

     

    Sunflower Electric Power Corporation's Great Bend, KS and Garden City, KS substation crews are now accepting applications for 2025 summer interns! This hands-on internship opportunity allows you to travel Sunflower's service area to inspect, install, test, and maintain electric transmission and distribution substation equipment including power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and other electronic systems. You will experience various aspects of construction and/or replacement of high voltage equipment. Beyond normally scheduled work, you also get to participate in higher intensity call-out situations!

    Opportunities:

    + Gain hands-on work experience in an electric utility to further your career.

    + Work side-by-side with an experienced and safety conscious crew that will help mentor and coach you.

    + Gain experience in reading and understanding construction and manufacturers’ drawings, schematic diagrams, and substation drawings.

    + Travel the countryside and work outdoors, within our service territory.

    + Provide support to achieve the lowest cost, most reliable, and environmentally sound transmission/substation infrastructure.

    Qualifications:

    + Currently enrolled in a post high school technical certification program in industrial electric, instrument and controls, or electronics

    + Successful completion of the Construction and Skilled Trades Selection System (CAST) Test.

    EEI Testing:We administer selection tests for a variety of positions. The required tests have been developed by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), a trade association of investor-owned electric utility companies. We strongly encourage candidates to review all the information, including the sample test brochures, and to use the available practice tests before taking the actual tests, available here:

    Practice tests provide sample questions and detailed discussions of the correct answers. It's important to take the practice test as you would the actual one, with similar intensity and concentration. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer.

     

    Note: EEI does not allow access to the actual tests. Testing sessions are held at various locations.
