    Opportunity Title: Humanitarian Parolees (OIRS/UHP) Communications Intern

     

    State Date: May/June 2025

    Duration: 4-6 Months, Standard business hours

    ABOUT US: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.

    ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:

    This internship position is part of our OIRS (formerly UHP) program. OIRS, or ORR Initial Resettlement Services, provides comprehensive case management including the following services: housing assistance, employment services, health screenings and vaccinations, medical services and emotional wellness services. Also included are public benefits enrollment, referrals to English classes, school enrollment for children, and direct financial assistance. This internship position is essential in bridging communication gaps, ensuring accurate and effective translation between clients and staff. The interpreter plays a key role in supporting the mission of the program by enabling smooth interactions and promoting understanding between individuals who speak different languages.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Attend Training and Meetings: Participate in regular training sessions and team meetings to stay informed about program updates, best practices, and community resources.

     

    Interpretation and translation from English to Spanish.

     

    Provide general administrative support to the OIRS/UHP team.

    OPPORTUNITY OUTCOMES:

    Intern will learn how to navigate client cases and case management.

     

    Intern will have the opportunity to shadow caseworkers and interact with clients.

     

    Intern will learn how to take case notes and work alongside both caseworkers and their clients.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    FLUENT SPANISH speaker REQUIRED

     

    Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to present information clearly and compassionately to people from various backgrounds.

     

    Organizational Skills: Solid organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines efficiently.

     

    Cultural Sensitivity: The ability to interact with people from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in a respectful and professional manner.
