    Job Description

    General Scope of Duties

    The Career Advisor plays a key role in guiding and supporting students in their career development, helping them navigate academic and career planning, explore professional opportunities, and acquire necessary skills for success. This role involves a combination of individual career advising, classroom instruction, program development, and internal and external partnerships. The Career Advisor will work closely with students, faculty, staff, and various campus offices to provide valuable resources, education, and support aimed at preparing students for their careers.

     

    General Duties and Responsibilities

    Career Advising:

    + Deliver individual career advising to students and occasionally, alumni. Assist students in establishing realistic academic and career plans that reflect their educational goals, personal values, skills, temperament, and individual interests

    + Assist students with goal setting and internship acquisition for a variety of industries; educate students, faculty, and staff on industry trends, employer culture, and hiring processes for fields of focus

    + Utilize and build knowledge on appropriate resources and strategies related to internship and job search, career exploration, self-assessment, professional development, and basic graduate school application process

    + Maintain and update advising caseload documentation, including Career Management System (Handshake) appointment notes, Career Action Program progress notes, and email

    + Support students through the critique of fellowship and graduate school statements

    + Serve as the assigned Career Advisor for the students (approximately 320 in total) in the designated Career Preparation Courses; read and provide feedback as needed on their Career Action Program application materials, and internship reflections

    + Participate in the Career Fellow selection process, including advertising, recruiting, interviewing, selecting candidates, and training new and returning Fellows

    + Coordinate partnerships and communicate with other campus constituents (Academic departments, Unity House, LGBTQIA+, REAL ) to promote Hale Center outreach and accessibility to all students

    + Support social media outreach and communication with the Marketing & Communications Fellows

    Classroom instruction:

    + Deliver career development sessions to groups of small and large student groups in classrooms and seminar rooms

    + Teach multiple sections of a one-credit, 7-week Career Preparation Course, focusing on career pillars including Professionalism, Exploration, Storytelling, and Networking.

    + Develop and present other career/academic-related sessions in various other classrooms as invited.

    Program Development:

    + Contribute to the collaborative work of Hale Center for Career Development ( HCCD ) team in the continued development and execution of an innovative career development program

    + Meet weekly with career advising staff to review, modify, adjust, and augment existing HCCD program and program delivery systems

    + Collaborate with the career advising team to evaluate, develop, updat,e and implement the Hale Center four-year career and academic planning curriculum

    + Collaborate with the HCCD team to compile and/or update advising materials, lesson plans, and protocols to ensure consistent program content and delivery by all advisors

    Internal and External Partnerships:

    + Connect with various academic departments and faculty members to share resources, information, and communication across campus.

    + Partner with other colleagues and departments to further educate the community on Hale Center’s programs and services and support student success

    + Contribute to the development of strategic tools to further the mission of HCCD programs to internal and external partners, (including NACE , EACE , Small College Career Alliance) to support HCCD and the Career Action Program

    + Contribute to content for social media platforms to promote HCCD activities and events

    First Year Seminar ( FYS ) Team Advising:

    + If desired, serve as Staff Advisor to one FYS in the fall semester as part of the team advising model; adhere to expectations of the role

    + Attend mandatory training before the start of the semester, and FYS Advising sessions at Camp Teach and Learn at the end of the spring semester

    + Collaborate with the FYS faculty member and student advisors to provide the initial network to first-year students to enhance their success and likelihood of retention

    + Attend FYS educational common hour modules as possible during the fall semester.

    + Advise students on how to access the academic and co-curricular resources of the College.

    + Refer students to resources that will help them navigate and engage in the campus community.

    + Participate in developing and presenting the Career-focused module for the first-year common hour presentation

    + Communicate as needed/regularly to ensure effective team advising and student engagement

    Education and Skills

    + Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in counseling, education or higher education administration preferred.

    + 2 – 4 years of relevant experience required; experience advising traditional college-age students preferred

    + Strong understanding of the value of a liberal arts education

    + Demonstrated willingness to participate in ongoing professional development

    + Training and experience using career assessment tools a plus

    + High level of proficiency and experience with technology, especially Google Workplace, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

    + Ability to learn new programs as needed

    + May be required to work some evenings and weekends occasionally; minimal travel to annual conferences will be required.

    Demonstrated abilities to:

    + Communicate effectively with students, alumni, parents, employers and outside constituents to positively promote the mission of the Hale Center for Career Development and the College

    + Efficiently and independently manage assigned projects and student and alumni caseload

    + Assist in supervising student staff including Operations Fellows, Marketing & Communications Fellows and Career Fellows

    + Exercise a resourceful approach to problem-solving that includes evidence of good judgment

    + Handle multiple tasks simultaneously with high quality output

    + Provide attentive customer service to all constituents, with a primary focus on students

    + Retain focus in fast-paced environment

    + Adjust quickly to changing priorities within the scope of the position

    + Personalize advising style according to the presenting needs of student/alumni with a sensitivity to the individual needs

    + Provide insightful, substantive and integrated career advising

    + Effectively present in small group and classroom setting to engage students

    + Evidence of a high level attention to detail

    + Provide positive contribution to the collaborative work of a professional team dedicated both to providing individual advising to students, and to the continued development and execution of an innovative career development program.
