    The San Francisco City Attorney’s Office is looking for a qualified and motivated litigator with experience in construction and government contracting matters to join its Construction & Public Contracting Team.

    About the Construction & Public Contracting Team

     

    The Construction & Public Contracting Team is a collaborative and dynamic group of nine attorneys, one paralegal, and two legal secretaries. The team provides legal advice to City departments on contracting for public works and improvements, goods and services, grantmaking and IT procurements. Members of the team represent the City in litigation involving these matters. The team supports various City departments, including the City Purchaser and Office of Contract Administration, Office of the Controller, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, SF Public Works, and SF Recreation and Parks.

     

    Deputy City Attorney Position and Responsibilities

     

    The Office is recruiting for an attorney to represent the City in civil litigation matters in both state and federal court and administrative proceedings relating to public works and improvement projects and the City’s goods and services contracting. The attorney will handle all aspects of their cases, including case assessment, litigation strategy, client communication and coordination, conducting and responding to discovery, all motion practice, settlement evaluation and negotiation, trial and appeal. The attorney will also support advice attorneys on the team to resolve pre-litigation disputes.

     

    Minimum Qualification

     

    + Licensed to practice law in California.

    Desired Qualifications

    + Three or more years of civil litigation experience.

    + Five or more years of construction and/or contract litigation experience.

    + Experience resolving disputes relating to public procurement matters.

    + Experience in public contracting labor matters such as prevailing wage requirements, project labor agreements, and skilled and trained work force requirements.

    + Ability to handle all phases of litigation, including intake and investigation, written discovery, depositions, motion practice, settlement negotiation, trial, and appeal.

    + Experience handling court appearances and oral argument.

    + Familiarity with local, state and federal rules of civil procedure and rules of court.

    + Experience and competency with e-discovery tools.

    + Ability to assume responsibility quickly, work both independently and collaboratively, and identify and assess substantive and procedural legal issues.

    + Excellent written and oral communication and advocacy skills.

    + Curiosity, adaptability, and a positive attitude.

    + Commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.

    Selection Procedures

     

    The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited to participate in the oral/performance interview.

     

    Salary and Benefits

     

    The Deputy City Attorney position has a 16-step salary scale ranging from $150,124 to $263,042. The successful applicant is appointed to a salary step based on years of experience as a lawyer.
