The Department:

You will join a nationally accredited agency (one of only five agencies in the State of California) by the Commission for the Accreditation of Parks & Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) amongst a team dedicated to upholding the department's mission to promote community health and wellness while building a diverse culture that embraces change and continuous improvement.

Position:

The Aquatics Instructor is a part-time year-round position. Under the supervision of the Aquatic Supervisor and/or Recreation Supervisor, the person in this position will organize, lead and teach specialized aquatic activities and do related work as required.

*Part-time employee cannot exceed 1,000 total hours worked within one fiscal year.

Key Responsibilities

+ Conduct American Red Cross swimming lessons ranging from Parent/Child Aquatics to Learn to Swim Level Six

+ Promote participation, provide information on available programs and enforce required safety rules and regulations

+ Rescue persons in distress and render first aid

+ Assist in conducting special events and maintenance and operation of aquatic facilities

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

+ Principles and techniques of teaching swim lessons to all ages

+ Knowledge of lifeguarding techniques, first aid, and other aquatic instruction

+ Must possess a current certificate in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

Ability to:

+ Interact and be patient and professional with the public

+ Ability to follow class guidelines and exercises, enforce required safety rules and regulations

+ Serve as an ambassador to the Parks and Recreation Department, as well as the City of Carlsbad

Experience & Education

+ Must possess a current certificate in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

+ Three months of experience as a swim instructor is preferred

Physical/Mental Requirements:

+ Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach,

+ Lift 25lbs

+ exposure to outdoors; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
