    Responsibilities:

    GENERAL PURPOSE:

    Under direction of the laboratory section leadership and with the ability to work independently, provides higher level support for the CoreLab, often involving (but not limited to) specialized testing, Quality Assurance development, and/or development and implementation of new procedures. Testing is routinely performed without supervision and complex interpretation of results is required. When applicable, keeps meticulous notes in regard to experimental methods, data, and conclusions. With laboratory area leadership, develops and maintains applicable standard operating procedures and policies. Communicates with internal and external clients clearly and professionally. Responsibilities may include setting up and monitoring ongoing programs specific to the laboratory section together with department leadership. With laboratory area leadership, develops and maintains procedure manual and manages inventory of supplies.

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    + Under direction of the laboratory section Supervisor(s) and with the ability to work independently, provides specialized testing and support for the laboratory section.

    SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:

    + Under supervision of laboratory section Supervisor(s) and Laboratory Director.

    SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXCERCISED:

    + May be responsible for designated laboratory section staff or shift/weekend supervision, or others as assigned.

    MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:

    + Standard office equipment such as telephone, PC, Laboratory Information System (LIS) terminal, calculator, copier, printer, fax machine, and the like.

    + Laboratory Instrumentation (Flow Cytometers, Hematology Analyzer, centrifuges).

    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Performs specialized testing or functions within the laboratory section. Acts as technical consultant to staff and other hospital personnel regarding technical aspects of the area of specialization. (40%)

    + Participates in the operational oversight of a specialized or designated area of the laboratory. (10%)

    + Participates in designated supervisory responsibilities within the laboratory. (5%)

    + Provides educational support and specialized training within the laboratory section. (10%)

    + Performs development and evaluation of new methods, products, and instrumentation. (10%)

    + Performs the duties of a Medical Technologist II. (15%)

    + Other responsibilities and projects as assigned. (5%)

    + Data management. (5%)

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    + BS in Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biology with an advanced certificate of completion at a NYS designated program or an equivalent education and experience and six years qualified experience post NY State licensure required.

    + Master’s degree preferred plus three years post NY State licensure.
