    Position description

    The Academic Director is responsible for three broad areas: (1) directing the Master of social science program and developing/overseeing new programs and initiatives; (2) teaching and mentoring; (3) service. The Academic Director may also actively continue their research (optional).

     

    Qualifications for the position: PhD. in a social science or related field; experience with administrative, research and teaching activities at the university level; experience and demonstrated success in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students; experience working with faculty, students, and academic personnel on collaborative projects; knowledge of interdisciplinary instruction and research; familiarity with and understanding of the Social Science Division's challenges and constraints.

     

    + SSIDP Responsibilities

    • Supervise SSIDP/MaSS Assistant to Director

    • Serve as mandatory reviewer for departmental transactions for travel and purchasing that were processed by the Assistant to Director.

    • Organize and coordinate new curricular and teaching initiatives including:

    • Creating new programs (e.g. new minors, cross-departmental quantitative research methods courses for social science majors)

    • Participating as member and representative of the Division in a number of campus working groups, such as the Campus Teaching Innovation Group (CTIG), the North Campus Collaborative, and Career Courses Consortium

    • Serve as primary Division contact person for the Teaching and Learning Center and other units on campus. Center and other units on campus.

    + MaSS Responsibilities

    • Oversee the daily activities of the program

    • Review and revise the MaSS curriculum

    • Plan and oversee MaSS budget, including decisions regarding tuition, SIR fees, salaries, marketing, promotions etc.

    • Teach one/two course annually

    • Serve as primary academic advisor for MaSS students (approx. 25/year)

    • Serve as a member of the MaSS Admissions, Capstone and Teaching committee

    • Meet individually with MaSS prospective applicants and admitted candidates

    • Recruit, interview and supervise the hiring of TAs

    • Develop and oversee MaSS marketing

    • Develop, organize and deliver some workshops for MaSS students and organize other workshops

    • Organize professional development training for MaSS students

    • Identify, connect, and manage relations with industry leaders and local employers from the public, private, and non-profit sectors

    • Manage alumni relations, including annual events

    + Teaching and mentoring

     

    The Academic Director teaches up to two graduate core courses in the Master or Social Science Program, advises students and mentor them in their research projects.

     

    + Research (optional)

     

    The Academic Director may conduct research, publish work in peer reviewed journals, develop and participates in research.
