    Summary

    The Packaging Mechanic diagnoses packaging equipment problems, repairs minor and major breakdown of high-speed packaging equipment, sets up and installs all packaging equipment, performs preventative maintenance items, improves line efficiencies, and ensures all equipment is in safe working condition.

    Key Responsibilities

    + **Set up, operate, and maintain food packaging equipment** , such as form-fill-seal machines, labelers, cartoners, case packers, and conveyors.

    + **Perform preventive and corrective maintenance** to minimize downtime and maintain production efficiency.

    + **Troubleshoot mechanical and minor electrical issues** to ensure consistent line operation and product flow.

    + **Adjust machine settings** to meet packaging specifications, including product size, weight, and labeling requirements.

    + **Ensure packaging operations meet food safety standards** , including allergen control, GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices), and HACCP protocols.

    + **Clean and sanitize packaging equipment** regularly to meet hygiene and food safety regulations.

    + **Monitor packaging integrity** , including seal quality, label accuracy, and proper coding (e.g., expiration dates).

    + **Collaborate with production and quality assurance teams** to resolve issues and support continuous improvement.

    + **Document maintenance activities, equipment performance, and downtime incidents** in compliance with internal and regulatory standards.

    + **Support efficient changeovers** , ensuring machines are configured correctly for new product runs while minimizing waste and delays.

    + **Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area** , adhering to plant safety and 5S principles.

    Typical Education

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

    Relevant Experience

    3+ years related experience and/or training

     

    Other Information

     

    Experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanics; Basic electrical repair in an industrial/manufacturing environment; Ability to read and interpret documents and drawings and write detailed repair reports; Ability to analyze and make decisions; Ability to diagram equipment control problems; Strong verbal and written English communication skills; Good organizational and planning skills.

     

    **Preferred:** Experience with 480-volt power and 24 control voltages to 120 volt electrical troubleshooting; Program and trouble shoot Allen Bradley SLC500 and MicroLogix series. Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactory, and represent the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    **Physical Requirements:** Lift and move heavy equipment; Climb ladders and work in high, precarious places.

    **Working Environment:** May be exposed to wet or humid conditions; May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions; May be exposed to high noise environments; May be exposed to chemicals used in the process; Could be in temperatures of -5 degrees.
