    General Job Description

    This is a supervisory position responsible for supervising police personnel engaged in law enforcement duties associated with the protection, safety, and welfare of students, employees, visitors, and property within the area under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas (UT) System. Provides supervisory and enforcement skills in the commissioned law enforcement services of The UT System. Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act). Works under moderate supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Lieutenant.

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Supervises and participates in the policing of the property of The University of Texas System.

    2. Preserves the peace by the use of all lawful means, interceding without warrant when authorized by law to prevent or suppress crime.

    3. Executes all lawful process.

    4. Gives notice to magistrate of offenses committed within the areas under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System.

    5. Arrests offenders with and without warrant where authorized by law.

    6. Investigates all criminal offenses, to detect and arrest criminals and to recover lost or stolen property.

    7. Attempts to locate missing persons.

    8. Detects violations of the Transportation Code, makes violator contacts, and places violators in custody or issues citations or warnings.

    9. Investigates motor vehicle collisions.

    10. Enforces Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents.

    11. Provides service, information, and direction to students, employees, and visitors.

    12. Writes reports, analyzes workloads, and plans work schedules.

    13. Ensures conformance to policies and procedures by checking quality of subordinate’s performance.

    14. Keeps staff informed of changes in departmental policies and regulations and legal interpretation.

    15. Monitors police officers and guards on assignments, reviewing, evaluating, and correcting performance.

    16. Conducts formal and informal training for continual development of police officers.

    17. Confers with law enforcement agencies on matters of mutual concern.

    18. Screens employment applications to determine eligibility.

    19. Performs office and administration tasks.

    20. Conducts surveillance, internal and background investigations.

    21. Executes court orders and serves warrants.

    22. Testifies in court and before grand juries.

    Non-Essential Job Functions

    1. May receive and/or supervise the receipt of payments from students and others for departmentally sponsored activities.

    2. Performs other related duties as assigned.

     

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

     

    The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

     

    1. Ability to successfully pass an approved promotional process administered by the Office of the Director of Police or designee.

    2. Must have the physical and mental capabilities to properly carry out responsibilities and duties as a commissioned police officer of The University of Texas System.

    3. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, system, university, and departmental policies and procedures.

    4. Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply basic supervisory methods.

    5. Knowledge and skills in emergency medical procedures, first aid, and CPR techniques.

    6. Skill in all phases of duties performed.

    7. Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the operation and safety procedures of all equipment utilized by the University Police Department necessary to perform assigned duties.

    8. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.

    9. Ability to demonstrate logical and effective problem solving.

    10. Ability to provide credible testimony in a court of law.

    11. Ability to work outdoors exposed to the weather.

    12. Ability to be on-call and work either day or night on any shift with varying days off and on holidays.

    13. Ability to obtain a Texas driver’s license, SFA permit, and van certification prior to employment.

    14. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.

    Physical Demands

    Ability to perform essential job functions; duties involve driving, walking, running, standing, stooping, climbing, crouching, pushing, jumping over, pulling, carrying, reaching above head, lifting, lowering, hand-wrist and elbow motion, grasping, and holding. Good physical condition and vision, ability to hear and speak and full use of arms and legs.

    Required Education

    A minimum of 60 credit hours accrued or an Associate’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education is required. Possession of Intermediate Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education is required.

    Required Experience and Training

    Three years of experience as a commissioned police officer with UTSP or two years of UTSP service and one year of service in another full-service law enforcement agency as a full-time commissioned peace officer is required. Must hold a Peace Officer Commission issued by The UT System.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Possession of Intermediate and Instructor Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education is preferred. Four years of experience as a commissioned police officer, which includes at least two years of experience as a commissioned police officer with UTSP , is preferred.

    This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing.

     

    This is an IT-sensitive position subject to the Computer and Network Security policy.

    Salary Information Hiring Salary - $30.00/hour

    This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
