Horstman is a 100+ year-old company with the distinction of pioneering work in the automotive industry in the 1920's and 30's, designing and manufacturing a number of innovative engineering solutions. Horstman is most known for the development of alternative suspension systems, which today is the largest part of Horstman business. The name "Horstman suspension" also refers to suspensions built by the Horstman company (now Horstman Defence Systems Ltd or its subsidiaries), whether of the bogie type, torsion beam design, hydrogas, hydropneumatic or other.

Horstman is a developer of high-performance independent suspension systems for both the defense industry and commercial markets. Horstman has a pedigree with developing innovative suspension solutions for both tracked and wheeled vehicles since the 1920's. Horstman is looking for driven, technical individuals, interested in helping Horstman stay at the forefront of suspension technology for the next 100 years.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Development / Test Engineering Manager supports the Horstman engineering team and business by leading the organization and delivery of developmental hardware, testing activities, test/component analysis, and testing documentation (plans and reports). Emphasis is on the de-risking of prototype, development and production designs of Horstman products.
The Development / Test Engineering Manager must be an energetic, highly motivated, self-starting and organized individual, with a strong capability for self-learning and driven to complete tasks. They must ensure that an action orientated approach is taken to product development and problem resolution. The individual must also be detail-oriented with a high standard for accuracy and thoroughness and capable of communicating with in-house engineers, suppliers and customers in both spoken and written forms.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Manage a team of test/development engineers and technicians to support the Engineering department by providing test plans, procedures, testing, inspections, analysis, and validation/ acceptance criteria used to verify that designs output meets the design requirements. This includes the production of comprehensive summary reports of results of testing and development activities.
+ Create and manage the records of development testing activities and contribute these toward the support documentation demonstrating the adequacy of Horstman products.
+ Develop requirements and manage the design and manufacturing of test rigs, fixtures, and special tools to support required testing needs and address current test equipment limitations.
+ Support Manufacturing in fabrication of assembly, test fixtures, and special tools
+ Prepare work instructions and training material for assembly area Technicians
+ Organize & lead assembly area Technicians during prototype builds
1. Trouble-shoot assembly issues and develop /implement work-around plans
2. Develop and implement continuous improvements in hardware assembly
+ Develop and implement continuous improvements in testing methodology
+ Manage the de-risking of technology on Horstman products critical path
+ Ensure work is undertaken within a configuration-controlled environment.
+ Execute the Development Testing and Processes / Methodologies with an emphasis on Safety
+ Ensure Horstman IPR and company trade secrets are protected.
+ Document the assumptions made in all the steps above, including assumptions related to operating modes or procedures, and the implications of testing and operational experience on the design.

KNOWLEDGE & ABILITY REQUIRED:

+ A hands-on approach is appropriate to a small business with a willingness and ability to perform tasks effectively where delegation is not possible.
+ Understanding of the challenges of technology development, new product development, and new product introduction projects.
+ Knowledge and experience in the use of formal design analysis, verification and validation methodologies and supporting techniques such as FMECA and DFM, to ensure manufacturing engineering and quality assurance best practice is embodied into the design.
+ Experience in dynamic testing and instrumentation, including the use of strain gauges, thermocouples, load cells, pressure transducers, etc.
+ Experience in the selection and use of engineering analysis tools.
+ Experience in the collection and analysis of test data from dynamic product testing.
+ Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.
+ Ability to obtain security clearance if needed.
The Ideal candidate will have:
+ Knowledge and understanding of the operation and usage of tracked and wheeled armored vehicles.
+ Suspension design and/or test experience with on/off-road wheeled & tracked vehicles, and high-pressure hydraulics, seals, and structures.
+ Formal training and experience in testing practices and methods is also strongly desired.
+ Knowledge and understanding of the repair and overhaul and/or post-design support environment.
+ Experience of development, and procurement of test hardware, and working with sub-contract test resources.
+ Familiarity with multinational projects subject to US ITAR export legislation.
+ Commitment to continuing professional development and education.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or equivalent Engineering Degree.
Must have 3 or more years of developmental / test engineering experience and a working knowledge of RMC Tools, Siemens LMS, LabView, or other motion control and/or test programming and data acquisition software. The candidate must be proficient with Microsoft Office software.
