UBMS Summer Peer Counselor

The Upward Bound Math-Science (UBMS) program at Binghamton University is one of eight TRIO programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education to strengthen participating students' math and science skills. The program's goal is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and encourage them to pursue post-secondary degrees in math and science and, ultimately, careers in the math and science professions. UBMS will have a six-week residential summer program (including an additional orientation week) for up to twenty high school students at Binghamton University. The Peer Counselor is a full-time position during the summer program.
Responsibilities:
Peer Counselors will work from Sunday afternoon to Friday evening. Hours will be based on program needs. Must be available to work for the entire summer program, including training (June 23 - August 8).
Peer Counselors have many responsibilities, including but not limited to:
+ Create a community that enhances a student's University experience.
+ Facilitate the resolution of conflicts through mediation and counseling. Refer the student to the Academic Counselor or Coordinator as appropriate if needed.
+ Coordinate ongoing formal and informal activities to help UBMS participants connect with each other.
+ Engage students via virtual platforms such as Zoom, Google Classroom, etc.
+ Promote participant involvement in activities offered by UBMS.
+ Create opportunities for students to provide feedback and evaluate UBMS programs and services. Channel student feedback to the appropriate sources.
+ Coordinate interactive meals with participants through a virtual setting and assist with enforcing behavioral standards and expectations.
+ Implement programs and activities to support participants' academic and life successes.
+ Work collaboratively with UBMS staff, Summer Faculty, and other campus/off-campus agencies to facilitate social programs and activities.
Job Requirements:
Required:
+ College Sophomore and above in good academic standing
+ Experience working with or mentoring high school students
+ Detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines
+ Flexible and able to adjust to changes in daily duties and tasks
+ Excellent communication skills
Preferred:
+ Experience using Zoom, Google Classroom, and other virtual platforms preferred
+ Recent graduates and graduate students are encouraged to apply
+ Previously held leadership positions are highly desirable
Additional Information:
Salary: up to $620/week; paid bi-weekly
Dates of Employment: Wednesday, June 23 to Wednesday, August 08
