    The Upward Bound Math-Science (UBMS) program at Binghamton University is one of eight TRIO programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education to strengthen participating students' math and science skills. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue post-secondary degrees in math and science and ultimately careers in the math and science profession. UBMS will have a six-week residential summer program (including an additional orientation week) for up to twenty high school students at Binghamton University. The Tutor is a part-time position during the summer program.

     

    UBMS is looking for people interested in tutoring high school students (ages 14-18), primarily in the areas of math, technology, lab sciences, literature/composition, and nursing (other areas may apply). We seek reliable individuals with good interpersonal communication skills, the ability to work with others, the desire to engage youth, strong organizational skills, and sensitivity to diverse students' needs. Tutors will work Monday to Thursday afternoon. Hours will be based on program needs. Orientation Week training runs from June 25-27 and June 30-July 3.

    Tutors have many responsibilities, including but not limited to:

    + Provide information, advice, support, and encouragement to students.

    + Help students stay motivated.

    + Help students understand the course material.

    + Help students prepare and study for quizzes, exams, and projects.

    + Help students identify learning styles and improve study skills.

    + Provide early referral to support services to ensure academic success.

    + Provide early intervention through frequent (weekly) contact with students.

    + Provide problem-solving assistance appropriate to the individual student.

    + Help build academic success strategies appropriate to the individual student.

    + Serve as liaison to course instructors, students, and program staff.

    + Maintain and report tutor contact log, timesheet, and any other materials to UBMS Academic Counselor.

    + Tutor and engage students via virtual platforms, including but not limited to Google Classroom (and if needed Zoom, Google Meets, etc).

    Job Requirements:

    Requirements:

    + Experience as a tutor or mentor.

    + Experience with different tutoring methods and styles. Ability to implement different types of learning strategies.

    + College Sophomore and above in good academic standing. Recent graduates and graduate students are encouraged to apply.

    + Experience working or mentoring diverse high school students.

    + Detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines.

    + Excellent communication skills.

    + Experience using Zoom, Google Classroom, and other virtual platforms preferred.

    Additional Information:

    Salary: $18.00 per hour for 20 hours a week.

     

    Dates of Employment: Wednesday, June 23 to Wednesday, August 08
