Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill ten, part-time (approximately 20 hours per week) Temporary Seed Analyst-Entry positions for the Seed Laboratory in the Department of Crop & Soil Sciences at Oregon State University ( OSU ).
OSU Seed Laboratory exists to provide quality control information to local to international seed customers, such as growers, cleaners, dealers, Oregon Seed Certification participants, Oregon Department of Agriculture, researchers, private companies or individuals and other various programs for the purposes of including but not limited to research, information, labeling, marketing and shipping. Seed testing for the Oregon Seed Certification Service is conducted through this Laboratory. The Laboratory serves the Oregon Department of Agriculture and other government agencies by conducting monitoring and regulatory testing and provides technical support to OSU and to the general public in numerous ways. The Laboratory provides technical training in the form of seed schools and workshops to various groups in Oregon, other states, or countries. The OSU Seed Laboratory enjoys national and international acclaim as a leader in seed testing procedures including research and development and seed identification.
The position provides assistance to the OSU Seed Laboratory, primarily the Purity Unit, during peak sample season. Employees in this position will prepare samples for senior analysts by separating seed contaminants, as well as occasionally using Seed Lab equipment to separate seed components for the testing performed in the Purity unit.
This position also prepares seeds for testing for the Germination and Special Testing units. The position also may help with sample preparation by dividing out the samples and finishing the samples by weighing the sample components.
Entry-level analysts, will be trained to perform more complex examinations and may assist in training other entry level analysts.
The incumbent must be able to work respectfully as a member of the Seed Lab team, be approachable for collaboration and training in order to contribute to the growth of the program and the entire Seed Lab team. All Seed Lab staff are responsible for ensuring the highest level of quality in all work products; creating a positive public reputation for the OSU Seed Lab and providing exceptional customer service.

Key Responsibilities
65% Sample Preparation: Using seed testing equipment, such as, but not limited to magnification and forceps to assist with visually and manually separating the working sample, primarily for the purity unit. May also prepare seed samples for the Germination and Special Testing Units.
15% Study literature, seed images, and materials on seed testing.
10% May assist with samples by dividing, blowing, screening, and weighing if needed.
5% Record keeping including, but not limited to, training records and sample test data.
5% Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to, cleaning equipment and personal work stations. Work collaboratively to support a respectful work environment for faculty, staff, and students.

What We Would Like You to Have
Previous seed testing experience.
Some college course work with a focus in plant-related biological sciences.
Experience working with standards and following written standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Quality control or quality assurance experience.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Analysts will spend the majority of their time in a sitting position, looking at seeds through a lighted magnifying lens, and using forceps to manipulate seeds (repetitive motion). Some work will be performed operating equipment and will require some sitting, standing and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
This position occasionally involves working around fumes, odors, dust, noise, and pesticide chemicals in a laboratory setting.
The work schedule is Monday through Friday with fluctuating/intermittent hours depending on sample load. Initially, work will be part-time, increasing to full-time during peak sample numbers, then may reduce back to part-time as sample numbers decrease. Must be able to work irregular/flexible schedules depending on work volumes/requirements.
