    Research Associate – Structural Biology Initiative – CUNY Advanced Science Research Center

    GENERAL DUTIES

    Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others.

     

    - Develops research plans and proposals and participates in acquiring funding

     

    - Collects, analyzes, and assures validity of data

     

    - Writes progress reports; writes and publishes findings

     

    - Collaborates with internal and external colleagues

     

    - Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties

    The Graduate Center (GC) is the focal point for advanced teaching and research at the City University of New York (CUNY), the nation's largest urban public university.     The ASRC's Structural Biology Initiative seeks a Research Associate within the Vallese Lab. This position is essential for ensuring the lab is properly equipped, maintained, and operated according to the highest standards. The Research Associate will support high-quality research and experiments by ensuring the lab operates efficiently and provides a safe environment for students. This position reports to Professor Vallese Francesca.

    Duties include but are not limited to:

    + Maintains a system to monitor lab safety and compliance records for all the students and laboratory personnel.

    + Interfaces with vendors and personnel to maintain functional laboratory equipment and adequate supplies and reagents.

    + Performs preventative maintenance and repairs of lab equipment as applicable.

    + Maintains inventory of common critical lab supplies, reagents, consumables, and ensures ordering is efficient and that needs are escalated appropriately.

    + Receives all supply orders and confirms accuracy of delivery.

    + Ensures common laboratory areas are clean and safe.

    + Will manage and supervise students in basic molecular biology/protein handling techniques in the lab

    + Responsible for training, implementation and enforcement of safety standards, and compliance to State and Federal regulation related to chemicals handling and disposal, flammables and hazardous material.

    + Performs other duties as assigned which are reasonably within the scope of this job classification.

    This position requires the incumbent to work in the lab Monday-Friday.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.

    OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

    A preferred candidate should have:

    + Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) degree with 2 years of experience in specific research areas (e.g., molecular biology, biochemistry) is essential. Additional experience with extensive bench lab work is preferred. Background in structural biology is a plus.

    + Candidate should have experience in biochemistry.

    + In-depth knowledge and willingness to learn scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct research, including experimental design, methods of data collection and analysis, and interpreting and reporting of results.

    + High attention to details.

    + Ability to take initiative and work well both independently and as part of a team.

    + Flexibility in work schedule to accommodate experimental needs.

    COMPENSATION

    $50,000 - $63,000/year. Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.
