    Responsibilities

    The Graduate Research Appointment (GRA) is a post-baccalaureate appointment for participants with an interest in biomedical research. The primary purpose is to provide a post-baccalaureate laboratory research experience that applies skills in science, technology, engineering or math to biomedical research including basic science or translational research. GRA participants will have the opportunity to participate in selected graduate classes and seminars while working in this role.

    Additional Information:

    The research group of Dr. Suman Bose has an opening for a Graduate Research Appointment position. The candidate will work on highly interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of cell engineering, molecular biology and bioinformatics to engineer cell-based products to treat chronic diseases. The role will involve the following:

     

    + Maintains mammalian cell lines and perform biomolecular assays (ELISA, qPCR, western blots, and others)

    + Develop new cell lines using cloning and genome editing

    + Perform DNA and RNA library prep for bulk and single cell

    + Statistical analysis of large-scale datasets (scRNA, genomics, proteomics) using R, Python, and Linux

    + Performs animal work that involves surgery, regular bleeds, blood glucose measurements, organ harvesting, and imaging.

    + Organizes data and performs basic statistical data analysis. Presents at research laboratory meetings and contributes to the writing of manuscripts.

    + Works under supervision of post-doctoral candidate but may perform some assignments independently as approved by Principal Investigator.

     

    This is an excellent opportunity for post-baccalaureate students interested in gaining 1-2 year of intense research experience in an interdisciplinary area, combining engineering with translational research and earning their position in journal publications.

    Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree with a strong background in science, technology, engineering, or math. Authorization to work and remain in the United States, without necessity for Mayo Clinic sponsorship now, or in the future (for example, be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident, refugee or asylee.

     

    Students that do not meet these criteria do not qualify.

     

    + Applicants who are currently in Graduate or Medical School are not eligible.

    + Eligibility of applicants with advanced degrees above BA or BS depend on the specific degree

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Preference will be given to those with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Biological, Chemical, or Mechanical), Biology, Chemistry, or any closely related field and previous research experience. Preferred 1+ year of lab experience with applied bioinformatics projects (preferably on large-scale –omics data). Staff will be trained to use the relevant techniques. Previous experience with some of the following techniques would be advantageous: mammalian cell culture, biomolecular assays (ELISA, Western Blot, RNA extraction, qPCR, confocal microscopy), molecular cloning and Animal work (surgery, bleeding, necropsy).
