As a Collection Systems Operator, you’ll enjoy a great work-life balance with a 9/80 schedule—working Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and every other Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with alternating Fridays off!
While you’ll have the stability of a regular schedule, Incumbents will also be required to work rotating shifts, off-hour shifts (9:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.), weekends, holidays, and occasionally be on standby or respond to emergency situations. Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and a medical examination which includes a back evaluation.
Collection Systems Operator performs a variety of collection system construction, maintenance, video inspection and customer services work; as experience is gained incumbents plan, assign, and review the work of crews engaged in collection system activities work; performs related work as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
Possession of a high school diploma or GED and t wo (2) years of work experience in sewer construction or maintenance work with one year at a level equivalent to the entry-level class AND an additional two (2) years of journey level experience in sewer maintenance and construction, inspection, and customer services work at a level equivalent to the City's Collection Systems Operator journey-level class. (refer to Collection Systems Operator Class Specification for entry-level and journey-level)
Other Requirements:
+ Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California driver's license.
+ Must obtain and maintain a Class A California driver's license within one year from date of hire.
+ Must possess strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds and to perform sustained physical labor.
+ Must be willing to work out-of-doors in all weather conditions and to work with exposure to unpleasant and hazardous materials, chemicals and gases, in confined spaces, wearing self-contained breathing equipment; heavy traffic and other hazards.
+ Must be willing to work overtime and off-hour shifts in emergency situations.
+ Must be willing to work with the constituents and odors associated with wastewater.
The Examination:
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.

The City of Stockton requires employees in this position to reasonably respond to emergencies at all times. Employees are required to maintain primary residence within 45 minutes of City Hall in order to timely respond to emergencies and meet the health, safety, and welfare needs of the City. New employees will have three months from their date of hire to comply with the requirement.
