    Primary Function of Organizational Unit

    The Department of Criminal Justice at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is the largest academic unit on campus, with nearly 600 undergraduate majors and over 50 graduate majors. The undergraduate program holds the distinction of being the only undergraduate program in North Carolina certified by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Additionally, it is the only HBCU program to receive endorsement from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. The department is also home to two distinguished institutes: the Institute for Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and the Juvenile Justice Institute.

     

    As the largest department at NCCU, the Department of Criminal Justice is poised for continued growth at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This expansion underscores the need for this position to ensure high-quality instruction and advising for both in-person and online programs. Supporting student success, including retention and graduation, is a top priority for both the University and the department.

     

    The mission of the department is to support the university’s efforts to promote student success (i.e., retention and graduation) at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to support the student’s personal and professional development.

    Primary Purpose of Position

    The Department of Criminal Justice will be hiring adjuncts to assist with the teaching load for the fall and spring semesters. Adjuncts will be expected to teach no more than 9 credit hours per semester, to include course instructions that achieve student learning outcomes. Adjunct faculty will be responsible for holding office hours that correspond to the course hours taught. OER and Canvas will be used for teaching.

     

    Criminal Justice is the largest undergraduate program at NCCU, and it is projected to grow at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This position is essential to the department’s efforts to support all undergraduate programs (face-to-face and online) which are offered in the 16-week or 8-week format.

     

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    **80%** **_Teaching:_** The adjunct faculty will teach one, two and no more than three undergraduate courses per semester. Candidates in specialization in these areas will have priority for immediate review include: Intro courses in Criminal Justice, Corrections, Juvenile Justice, Law Enforcement and Homeland Security and upper level courses in Juvenile Justice, Corrections, Criminal Law, Criminal Processes and Procedures, Statistics, Research, and Criminology. Adjunct faculty will be responsible for holding office hours that correspond to the course hours taught. In addition, individuals will serve as a mentor for students within each of their classes to ensure success and nutrition toward graduation.

    **2** **_0% Preparation:_** Training will be required each semester to enhance teaching skills around Open Education Resources (OER), Canvas, Syllabi preparation, and course alignment along with other areas as deemed necessary.

    Minimum Education/Experience

    **Minimum Education Requirements** : The applicant must hold a Master’s degree in criminal justice or a related discipline, or a Master’s degree with a concentration in the teaching discipline (minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in discipline.)

    **Minimum Teaching Requirements** : The successful candidate must be able to show they are experienced in teaching criminal justice or homeland security courses using Canvas, Open Education Resources (OER), online and **in person (Preferred if local)** . QM Certification is favored but not a requirement.
