License and Certification Qualifications: Valid Georgia driver's license required. Bilingual interpreter or translator certification preferred.Education Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in related field and training using both English and a designated secondary language as medium required.Experience Qualifications: Experience with translation of technical documents required. Experience in simultaneous interpretation of information both from English to designated language and from designated language to English required. Two years of experience composing, editing, and translating materials in English and the designated second language and providing immediate oral interpretations during group meetings, one-to-one situations, in a school district, or public institution preferred.Skills Qualifications: Strong interpersonal skills in intercultural situations; ability to work with school leaders and staff to develop outreach programs to engage culturally diverse parents; knowledge of American culture and the culture(s) of speakers of designated second language; ability to read and write effectively in standard English and the designated second language; knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and idiomatic usage of English and the designated second language; wordprocessing skills in English and the second language; editing skills sufficient to prepare articles for publication in English and the designated second language; ability to listen to English and interpret in the designated second language simultaneously; ability to speak in public meetings, maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, and work effectively with district personnel and the public; and ability to learn how to use simultaneous interpretation equipment.Primary Responsibilities: Assist with parent outreach activities to language minority parents of English Learners at Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) and the International Newcomer Center (INC), translate various documents between English and the designated second language, and provide oral interpretations between English and the designated language during formal district, school, and community meetings.I. Provide outreach to parents of English Learners throughout GCPS to increase engagement with and support of their children's education, including workshops and activities for parents and guardians on how to support their children's progress towards and attainment of proficiency in English and academic achievement.II. Read and review current research and literature on best practices in engaging parents of English Learners.III. Prepare and provide professional learning to GCPS educators on issues relating to educating language minority students and collaborating with their families, using the GCPS Language Bank effectively, and techniques for conducting meetings that engage multicultural communities.IV. Provide school leaders and staff with information on language communities in schools and share best practices for engaging those communities.V. Represent the district and/or district leadership (i.e. Board of Education, CEO/Superintendent, Cabinet, etc.) as a liaison to linguistic community organizations.VI. Provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretations at school (i.e. parent -teacher conferences), community, and district meetings and in some legal situations, using headphones and microphones during oral interpretations as needed.VII. Prepare accurate and complete written translations of district-level documents (e.g., parent information documents, enrollment documents, student parent handbooks, academic contracts, curriculum information, and GCPS forms). VIII. Archive translated documents into the shared drive.a. Review and edit documents for currency and accuracy.IX. Maintain currency on issues regarding parent engagement, technical translation and interpretation, electronic document processing in languages other than English, and management of electronic files.X. Perform other duties as assigned. Physical Demands:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods of time. The employee is also required to talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may be required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, and/or reach. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
