    General Job Description

    Grant Funded Position-continued employment contingent on funding

     

    This is a professional position responsible for conducting research for the Montaña Aquatic Ecology Lab at Stephen F. Austin State University. Responsible for assistance with leading field data collection, coordinating the processing of field samples, organizing and analyzing data, and disseminating findings through written reports, publications, and presentations. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Principal Investigator (PI).

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Conducts standardized field surveys, both fish and habitat assessments, to document those suitable for native and imperiled fish species.

    2. Serves as project coordinator, assisting with project budget administration and training graduate and undergraduate students as needed.

    3. Assists in disseminating project overviews and results at conferences and meetings and writing periodic progress reports and final reports as needed.

    4. Assists graduate students working on the project as part of their thesis projects as well as undergraduate students working as field technicians on the project.

    5. Supports the PI through the review and analysis of all data collected in the field and helps with database organization and maintenance.

    6. Aids in supervising the data transcribed by students and maintaining quality control of all data collected in the field.

    5. Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines.

    6. Ability to collect, manipulate, analyze, and interpret large datasets.

    7. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

    8. Ability to prepare reports and scientific papers of findings.

    9. Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.

    10. Ability to work as a member of a team and independently with general supervision.

    11. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.

    12. Ability to learn office and university-specific software.

    13. Ability to train and supervise others.

    14. Ability to obtain and maintain a Texas driver’s license.

    15. Ability to operate boats and tow trailers.

    16. Ability to work evenings, nights and weekends as necessary.

    17. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.

    Physical Demands

    Physical ability to perform the duties of the position, including ability to stand and sit for over one hour at a time, lift and push over 50 pounds, use hands to finger/handle/feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, crawl, climb or balance, talk and hear regularly as well as close vision. Must be able to travel out of town and overnight (camping), and perform aquatic habitat fieldwork exposed to environmental conditions.

    Required Education

    Master’s degree in fisheries, ecology, freshwater ecology, wildlife ecology, statistics, or a related field is required.

    Required Experience and Training

    Three years of related experience is required. Experience in statistical analysis software (R Software) and GIS software (ArGIS or ArcMap) is required.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience with Passive Integrated Transponder ( PIT ) tagging is preferred. Experience with spatiotemporal analytical approaches and software is preferred. Experience with processing stable isotope analysis is preferred.

    This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
