This position performs daily assigned and routine work in contract administration, field inspection and field materials testing, and performs maintenance and operation of snow and ice control; and performs related work as required.
Some examples of work for this position are listed below but not limited to the following:
Function: Contract Administration
+ Obtains representative samples of bituminous, concrete, aggregate, grading and base materials and performs appropriate tests to ensure quality assurance.
+ Performs the construction materials acceptance tests (such as gradations, density, air, beam, cylinder\and slump) in the field as required to ensure quality of materials.
+ Reads and interprets plans and specifications to ensure contractor compliance.
+ Checks the dimensions and tolerances of constructed roadway features to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.
+ Monitors the work of contractor personnel to ensure compliance with established processes, practices, and specifications.
Function: Design
+ Performs basic/routine technical computer-aided drafting and designing (CADD) in accordance with CADD data standards to meet deadlines.
Function: Snow & Ice
+ Maintains roadways for snow and ice control:removes snow from roadway and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.
Minimum Qualifications
The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with one year of experience in a combination of the following areas:
+ Experience in contract administration (roadway and/or bridge construction), bridge maintenance, bridge safety inspection, design, hydraulics, materials, soils, permits, planning, pre-design, right of way, road\surface/roadside maintenance, snow/ice, surveys, and/or traffic engineering.
AND
+ A minimum of six months experience in performing design activities which must include computer aided drafting and design (CADD)
OR
+ A two-year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or equivalent. _(In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience, you must submit a copy of your transcripts.)_
AND
+ Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
+ Applicants that are made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized ACT math and reading test. The required passing score for the math portion is a level 5 or higher and the reading portion is a level 5 or higher.
**Licenses:** Valid MN Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction within 6 months of hire.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to occasionally lift articles such as 50-pound bags of sample materials maximum and frequent lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. May require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) on a daily basis.

The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
