This position is responsible for independently planning, designing, and executing original research required for the advancement of fisheries management in Minnesota, particularly related to quantitative fish population dynamics and modeling, application of emerging technologies, and fisheries (emphasis on esocid family) management and ecology; recommending statewide guidelines and strategies to solve fisheries management problems; developing and evaluating new techniques to protect and enhance aquatic resources in Minnesota; developing and evaluating new policies required to ensure the sustainability of fisheries resources in Minnesota; representing the Department in public meetings and providing advanced technical expertise; contributing to peer reviewed, scientific literature; and acting as a key participant in development, evaluation and implementation of DNR fisheries management policies.
This position may be eligible to telework on a part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete an annual telework agreement.
Minimum Qualifications
A Master’s degree in a fisheries related area with two years post-graduation experience including independent research project design, implementation and analysis; or a PhD in a fisheries related area including independent research project design, implementation and analysis.
Thorough knowledge/understanding of current fishery science, especially fish population dynamics and quantitative fisheries modeling.
Demonstrated capability to pursue research related to emerging angling and sampling technologies and fisheries management and ecology.
Skill in statistical analyses, including proficiency in Program R or other statistical software packages.
Advanced analytical skills to conduct research and to provide critical review of peer research.
Exceptional personal and written communication skills as well as oral presentation skills. At least two (2) senior authored fisheries research articles in peer-reviewed, scientific journals.
Conflict management and critical thinking skills to analyze and resolve ambiguous or controversial situations and make difficult decisions on policy/program direction.
Management skills to effectively plan, budget, motivate, coordinate, and direct resources available to meet fisheries research and management needs.
Ability to collaborate effectively on large scale projects involving a diverse team from various scientific disciplines.
Recognized ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships.
Capability to operate and maintain a variety of fisheries sampling equipment including boat/motors, nets, electrofishing equipment, sonar units, water quality monitoring instruments, and interest in keeping abreast of emerging sampling and angling technologies.
Demonstrated computer skills including knowledge of statistical software, databases, spreadsheets and word processing sufficient to create and write reports and access data, and presentation development software.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience conducting applied research related to esocid fishery management and ecology.
Experience using emerging technologies such as forward-facing sonar or anonymous location data.
Additional Requirements
This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver's License with a clear driving record.
