Description:
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Coordinates the equipment needs of the Operating Room, ensuring availability of properly functioning equipment as needed, including anesthesia machines. Acts as equipment resource person for staff. Serves the population from neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Assists O.R. staff in a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, positioning and moving patients, locating, moving and set-up of equipment and supplies, preparing rooms, and opening sterile supplies.
• Assist OR staff with various types of intubations including Endotracheal, laryngeal Mask Airway, video laryngoscope, etc as needed.
• Maintains sterile processing supplies within the expiration date and ensures sufficient inventory of all equipment and supplies in collaboration with Clinical Engineering.
• Perform assigned tasks to ensure a clean and orderly environment.
• Obtains and returns equipment as needed.
• Ensures the availability of properly functioning equipment in the O.R.
• Point person for assisting Anesthesia with equipment needs. Assists anesthesia provider and staff with ensuring availability of equipment and supplies for anesthetized patient in all ancillary departments
• Set up and maintenance of equipment following recommended guidelines to ensure safety and optimum functioning.
• Responsible for routine testing and maintenance of equipment, including changing filters, etc.
• Coordinates repair of equipment and acquisition of loaners as appropriate.
• Participates in assuring adherence to Infection Control Standards, policies, and procedures. Cleans equipment reusable items and machines daily and in between surgical procedures according to protocol.
• Participates in department performance improvement activities.
• Sets up anesthesia related monitoring for arterial lines, central venous lines, etc.
• Performs sterilization and monitoring tests.
• Pulls and utilizes preference cards.
• Prioritizes needs with ancillary staff while assisting with room turnovers and patient throughput.
• Be visible on the floor, and available when needed by OR Charge RN to direct you to where needed based on needs of the department.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
• Collaborates with Director, Managers and anesthesia in obtaining information for budget preparation.
• Delivers specimens to Lab; obtains blood from Blood Bank
• Serves as a resource person for hospital sections and other departments in regard to anesthesia equipment needs.
• Participates in orientation of new employees.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Three years of experience preferred in operating room as a Surg Tech, Surg Assistant, or servicing medical equipment.
• Demonstrates an understanding of anatomy and physiology as it applies to anesthesia care.
• Ability to read, write and speak English language.
• Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeks of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: (Constant = 67-100% of workday, Frequent = 34-66% of workday, Occasional = 33% or less of workday)
CONSTANT
• Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances such as in transporting patients to their rooms or ancillary departments.
• Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to co-workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
• Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal range. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
FREQUENT
• Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arms in any direction such as in reaching for IV bags and monitor cables and controls and retrieving supplies from cabinets.
• Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine to assist patients, such as to and from a wheelchair or bed.
• Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time when assisting the nursing or medical staff, when performing EKG testing and phlebotomy.
• Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward, such as transporting patients by cart or wheelchair.
• Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a
sustained motion, such as in pulling or adjusting a patient on a stretcher or assisting the flight team with off-loading a patient from the helicopter.
• Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles. This activity would be used to move patients from an EMS stretcher to an Emergency Department cart.
OCCASIONAL
• Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motions of the wrists, hands and/or fingers) when performing phlebotomy or use of a keyboard.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:
If a patient is unable to function independently, a mechanical/assistive device and/or additional personnel must be utilized. If an object requires lifting > 50 lbs., additional equipment/personnel must also be utilized.
Heavy work: Exerting up to 65 lbs. push/pull (force to move frequently, and lifting up to 50 lbs. occasionally, and lifting up to 40 lbs. frequently, and lifting up to 20 lbs. constantly, to move patient and/or objects.
VISUAL ACUITY REQUIREMENTS:
• Machine operators (including inspection), computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines (including inspection), using measuring devices, assembly of parts at distances close to the eyes.
INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Adaptability to performing under stress when confronted with emergent, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations, or situation in which working speed and sustained attention are make-or-break aspects of the job.
• Adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure.
• Ability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, patients and visitors and satisfactory job performance despite the stress of a hospital work environment.
• Ability to achieve and maintain attention to detail required.
• Work requires the analytic ability necessary to prioritize own workload.
• Work requires the interpersonal skills necessary to comfort patients, their families and/or significant others, and to communicate effectively with co-workers and physicians.
TOOLS/EQUIPMENT:
• Standard medical and nursing equipment and special equipment found in assigned area.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Works on a patient care unit where there is exposure to infectious disease, although potential for personal harm or bodily injury is limited when the employee follows all safety procedures and uses appropriate safety equipment.
• Work requires the performance of various unpleasant patient care tasks on a daily basis.

• Reports to the Supervisor.
