The Aquatic Branch is responsible for the management of aquatic wildlife resources for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, including fisheries management, hatcheries, native species conservation and recovery, aquatic nuisance species control, and fish health.
Description of Job
The coordinator and seasonal staff will conduct fieldwork, including detailed surveys of aquatic invertebrate populations, assess habitat conditions, develop recommendations for targeted conservation and recovery strategies, and react to ESA issues. The coordinator will serve as an aquatic invertebrate expert and will facilitate collaboration with other state and federal agencies, academic institutions, and non-profit organizations, fostering a more holistic approach to aquatic invertebrate management, conservation, and recovery. The coordinator will contribute to the broader understanding of aquatic ecosystem health, aid in the identification of early warning signs for potential water quality issues, and help to develop strategies to ensure that aquatic invertebrates remain resilient in the face of ongoing environmental challenges.
Program Design and Development
Develops and implements statewide studies, monitoring programs, and status evaluations of aquatic invertebrates, including aquatic insects, crustaceans, and mollusks. Identifies existing data sources and develops collaborative relationships. Identifies data gaps, limiting factors, habitats, and conservation needs. Manages field surveys and crews. Formulates planning and conservation guidance and documents. Identifies and pursues funding and grant opportunities to implement conservation actions. Prioritizes programs and actions to meet statewide goals. Guides decision-making processes. Leads and/or participates in statewide planning efforts, including developing new conservation strategies and plans and participating in State Wildlife Action Plan updates.
Technical Expertise and Agency Representation.
Compiles and analyzes technical data on aquatic invertebrates and maintains technical knowledge through the review and evaluation of professional literature and programmatic reports. Disseminates technical information on aquatic invertebrate species and provides technical counsel to other staff. Leads species status assessments that influence federal listing, down-listing and delisting processes under ESA and state designations. Represents CPW and Colorado on recovery teams and mulit-agency committees as a technical expert. Leads development and justification for species recovery goals and objectives within Colorado.
Serves as a liaison to other work units integral to native aquatic invertebrate conservation, such as the fisheries management unit, water resources unit, aquatic research unit, aquatic nuisance species unit, terrestrial invertebrate program, and regional management. Work with federal aid coordinators and grant administrators to identify and pursue funding opportunities for conservation projects. Facilitates collaboration and coordination with other state agencies (such as the Colorado Department of Public Health- Water Quality Control Division and Environment and Colorado Water Conservation Board), federal agencies, academic institutions, and non-profit organizations.
Represents CPW at statewide and regional levels as an aquatic invertebrate expert and information source for conservation issues, conservation programs, water quality issues, and land use decisions. Serves as the principal technical representative for CPW on committees and coordination teams. Recommends, reviews, writes, comments, and consults with other affected interests outside of the agency on CPW statewide directives, regulations, management guidelines, and strategies for the effective and consistent implementation of aquatic invertebrate conservation programmatic goals and objectives. Responds to inquiries from other agencies and the public as appropriate.
Conservation Planning and Implementation
Assist the Native Aquatic Species Manager with developing and updating guidance such as conservation plans. Ensure consistency between guidance documents and the State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP). Determine planning needs for aquatic invertebrate species identified as Species of Greatest Conservation Need in the SWAP. Assist with revisions of the SWAP. Implement and/or coordinate on-the-ground conservation actions. Develop additional conservation plans and strategies as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
Seven (7) years of relevant experience in Invertebrate biology or conservation, ecology, environmental science, aquatic biology, conservation biology, ecology or an occupation related to the work assigned to this position.
OR
A combination of related education in Wildlife Management, General Biology, Aquatic Biology, Fishery Biology, , Ecology, Environmental Science, Zoology/Animal Sciences, invertebrate biology, conservation biology and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to seven (7) years.
Substitutions
+ Additional appropriate experience will substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis. Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Current or former State experience relevant to this position
+ Current or former Colorado Parks & Wildlife work or volunteer experience
+ Experience in or assisting in the planning, budgeting, implementation, monitoring, reporting, and evaluating aquatic invertebrate programs and projects.
+ Experience working with and coordinating with diverse partners.
+ Knowledge of or experience with aquatic invertebrate identification and taxonomy.
+ Knowledge of aquatic toxicology and water quality standards.
+ Knowledge of or experience with designing and conducting aquatic invertebrate surveys and collections.
+ Experience with or education specific to native Colorado aquatic invertebrate conservation.
+ Master’s Degree or higher in invertebrate conservation, entomology, aquatic biology, fisheries biology, ecology, conservation biology or closely related field.
+ Experience working in outdoor conditions, including knowledge of the principles of safety in the outdoors.
+ Ability to safely work in and around aquatic habitats including streams, lakes, and wetlands.

Conditions of Employment
+ + Must possess and maintain a valid state of Colorado driver's license if operating a State vehicle.
+ Hybrid- position will require travel for field work and to field offices across the state. Some duties assigned to this position may be completed from remote or home office.
+ Travel to in-person meetings and/or field-work required. Usually 5-10 days per month, occasionally more.
