    Job Description

    Public Health Epidemiologist II-51181 – Open to candidates who filed for PUBLIC HEALTH EPIDEMIOLOGIST Exam No. 5140 within the filing period From: November 6, 2024, To: November 26, 2024. THE TEST DATE: Multiple-choice testing was scheduled on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

     

    The Bureau of Tuberculosis Control prevents the spread of tuberculosis and aims to eliminate it as a public health problem in New York City. The Office of Surveillance, Informatics and Evaluation conducts surveillance of suspected and confirmed cases of TB; maintains the TB registry and case management system (Maven) of all TB cases, contacts to TB cases, persons suspected of having TB and children under 5 with latent TB infection (LTBI); conducts data analysis and research to describe the epidemiology of TB in NYC and to inform TB prevention and control policy. The office also coordinates interjurisdictional transfers of TB patients to ensure continuity of TB evaluation, treatment, and care. We are seeking a Public Health Epidemiologist I to join our office as a Laboratory Analyst. This person will operate as part of the Surveillance and Laboratory Coordination Team and report directly to the Surveillance Team Lead.

     

    The Laboratory Analyst will oversee laboratory specimen tracking, troubleshoot with labs regarding issues with the processing of TB specimens, conduct false-positive investigations, and ensure that all results are properly entered into Maven and communicated to staff.

    DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

    o Monitor and track all incoming TB laboratory results

    o Track specimen processing through a laboratory processing route starting from ordering provider through various labs and ending in the DOHMH systems

    o Respond to routine requests from throughout the bureau regarding specimen status

    o Consult with case managers and providers on laboratory results

    o Troubleshoot specimen processing issues and liaise with laboratories

    o Conduct false positive investigations

    o Coordinate with the DOHMH ECLRS/EDRI teams to manage technology and systems issues related to processing of results data

    PREFERRED SKILLS:

    Strong computer skills

     

    Experience with statistical programming languages, such as SAS, SQL, R, and/or Python

     

    Strong analytical skills

     

    Excellent written and oral communication skills.

     

    Excellent organizational skills; ability to prioritize and multitask

     

    Ability to work in a team environment

    Experience working with laboratory data and LIS systems is a plus

    Proficiency with Microsoft Office (MS word, Excel etc.)

    PUBLIC HEALTH EPIDEMIOLOGIST - 51181

    Qualifications

    1. A master’s degree in public health or epidemiology from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 12 graduate credits in epidemiology; or

    2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university plus two years of full-time paid experience as a health professional in a position which requires data collection and the reading and interpretation of medical charts and medical information in support of surveillance and epidemiologic investigations.
