  • Software Development Engineer, AWS Fault Injection…

    Amazon (Arlington, VA)

    Description

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

The Pisa team is focused on improving the resiliency of AWS services by preventing the types of failure that lead to congestive collapse. Our team, which is small and fast-moving, designs and builds tooling that identifies potential vulnerabilities to such failures before they happen, and helps service owners use this information to strengthen their service’s in-depth resilience. The problem that we are tackling is challenging and ambiguous. We are taking an innovative approach to solving it that draws on a blend of academic theory, scientific experimentation and analysis, and pragmatic systems engineering. At the same time, we are intensely customer-focused, and we work closely with engineers across AWS to help analyze their service and put in place protective mechanisms with the right performance and availability trade-offs.

We are looking for an experienced engineer to join our team who will own and implement key components of the Pisa tool suite, ranging from implementations of admission control schemes and retry policies, through to scaling the infrastructure we use for modeling and simulation.

Our ideal candidate will have experience working with large-scale distributed systems and will be passionate about operational excellence. You will write maintainable, well-tested code (in Python and Java), but won’t be afraid to move fast with a prototype when needed, and to use your creativity and problem-solving skills to overcome unforeseen challenges. You will be comfortable digging in to unfamiliar code, dashboards and documentation to discover how things work, and will be fascinated by how complex systems behave, especially how they fail and how they recover. You will enjoy the intellectual aspects of working closely with scientists, but will also relish the opportunity to positively impact services that are relied on by customers around the world.
