Accounting Manager/Supervisor

Description We are looking for a skilled Accounting Manager to lead the general accounting operations for a dynamic higher education institution in Portland, Oregon. This role offers the opportunity to oversee external financial reporting, collaborate with teams across the organization, and provide essential financial insights to support strategic decision-making. Working in a hybrid environment, you will contribute to policy improvements and play a key role in enhancing accounting practices.
Responsibilities:
• Manage the preparation of complex financial statements, including the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.
• Ensure compliance with governmental and non-profit fund accounting standards and requirements.
• Oversee financial transactions related to asset capitalization, depreciation, accruals, property tax collections, and bank reconciliations.
• Coordinate audits and act as a liaison with independent external auditors.
• Develop and implement internal control practices while monitoring adherence to policies and regulations.
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering team development and growth.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to manage timelines and deliver accurate financial information.
• Utilize accounting software systems such as Ellucian Banner, Workday, or similar ERP platforms.
• Analyze financial policies and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency and compliance.
• Support a culturally diverse organization with multiple locations, ensuring inclusive practices in financial operations. Requirements • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field; equivalent experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.
• At least five years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, including two years in a supervisory role.
• Proficiency in managing complex financial reporting and audits.
• Strong knowledge of accounting standards for government and non-profit entities.
• Experience with accounting software systems, including ERP platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to build and lead effective teams.
• Proven track record in developing and maintaining internal controls.
• Ability to work successfully within a culturally diverse organization with multiple locations.
