As a Structures Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and development of automotive closures structures parts and assemblies such as hoods, fenders, front and rear side doors, decklids, and liftgates. This role emphasizes aluminum or composite designs with knowledge of hinges and kinematic requirements, taking concepts from a blank page into production. You will design with excellence at both the system and component level, paying great attention to detail to optimize performance, size, weight, durability, and cost. Collaboration with internal teams and external suppliers, as well as other stakeholders, is essential to integrate multiple systems efficiently and achieve world-class designs.
Responsibilities
+ Design and develop automotive closures structures parts and assemblies such as hoods, fenders, front and rear side doors, decklids, and liftgates.
+ Create optimized designs for performance, size, weight, durability, and cost.
+ Work closely with internal teams and external suppliers to integrate multiple systems.
+ Collaborate with stakeholders and attribute owners across the company, including Vehicle Safety, Vehicle Dynamics, NVH, Durability, Manufacturing, and Design Studio.
+ Interpret and use analysis results from CAE to guide and evolve designs.
+ Ensure efficient process sequences and build quality by collaborating with manufacturing.
+ Work cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Design, Product Development, Purchasing, Supplier Quality, Stamping, and Suppliers.
+ Create testing plans and conduct/coordinate physical tests to validate design concepts and performance targets.
+ Perform detailed analysis of section properties, materials, and manufacturing processes through benchmarking.
+ Coordinate virtual engineering and physical validation testing activities.
+ Communicate and coordinate with interfacing suppliers.
+ Provide direction and negotiate balanced solutions effectively.
+ Determine required tolerances using GDT.
+ Travel domestically and internationally as required.
Essential Skills
+ 5 years of expertise in automotive closures systems and sub-systems at OEM or supplier.
+ Solid track record of successful system level integration.
+ Experience working with Class A surface data.
+ Proficient 3D CAD skills with CATIA V5/V6 or similar software.
+ Hands-on practical experience in prototype assembly and production assembly.
+ Experience in technology system and supplier selection.
+ Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
+ Detail-oriented personality with a determined problem-solving attitude using an engineering first principles approach.
+ Design release engineering experience, including engineering change management and project management.
+ Strong understanding of analysis tools such as ANSYS, OptiStruct, MatLab, ADAMS.
+ Proof of excellence in past positions with creative problem-solving in mechanical design.
+ Experience in full life cycle development from concept to prototype to full production.
+ Knowledge of manufacturing processes applicable to closures structures, such as castings, hot and cold stampings, extrusions, and joining techniques.
+ Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET-accredited institution or equivalent closures automotive experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Hands-on experience in prototype assembly and production assembly.
+ Willingness to assemble your own parts.
Work Environment
You will work in a collaborative environment with some of the most accomplished minds in the industry. The role involves working closely with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, design, product development, purchasing, supplier quality, and stamping. You will also coordinate with external suppliers and may need to travel domestically and internationally as required. The environment is fast-paced and rapidly changing, requiring excellent multi-tasking abilities. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to innovative and sustainable luxury electric vehicle designs.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $47.00 - $57.00/hr.
